Any idea if it's possible to get an International Driving License on the same day of the application?

I see from http://www.theaa.ie/aa/motoring-advice/driving-in-europe/international-driving-permit.aspx that they say:
Our IDP walk in service is available from 3.30pm to 5pm Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Once we have received all documents, we will process your IDP and you can collect it at our next available opening time.

but not sure if I can ask them to put an Express service on it and drop it in at 3.30 then pick it up at 5pm ?

What do you need it for?

The last 2 I got the very nice girl on the desk processed there and then, the first took about 15 minutes, the second about 5. If they're not busy and you have everything properly completed and in order there's a good chance they'll process for you straight away.

It's an international permit rather than license, it's really nothing more than a set of translations of your license into different languages with your picture attached and stamped by the AA.

It's also a bit of a faff getting into the office, ring the buzzer on the ground floor, go in and take the stairs on the left, you'll usually have to ring the buzzer on the office door as well.

    Excellent thanks!

You don't need it for that. It's just a scam by the AA to get 15 euro off you. All car rental agencies will accept your Irish licence, no need for anything else.

I'm wondering how everyone else knows better than me what I need for the country I'm travelling to.

The laws of the country state you must have an international driving permit, along with a standard driving license, and passport on you at all times.

Why so coy about the country you need it for? Perhaps some of us have experience driving in that country.

The AA did mine in five minutes in front of me.

It's a funny yoke. It's more or less a piece of photocopied paper translating the text from your own driving licence to non-roman script. I can't imagine it's necessary anywhere in Europe and North America. I got mine for Japan. I remember thinking that it could probably be done adequately online.

Not coy, just not relevant to the discussion but if you must know...

    Bingo

I didn't end up renting in the end, so I can't say if I needed it.

    you do... I checked

I'm fully aware most countries don't need it.. something other posters in this thread automatically assumed I didn't for some bizarre reason.

Tbh, it would have helped a lot if you'd state that from the outset, and also how long you'll bee staying for.
Many countries do not actually require a IDP at all but a lot of people think that because you're in another country you need an IDP.

Foreigners in Japan that will stay for an extended period are supposed to convert to a Jap licence. The regulations regarding this period and what is ok or not is kinda unclear.

I rented cars in a few of the countries on the AA list with my Irish license without any problems.
If you don't want discussion then maybe just call them and ask them.

I didn't want a discussion about whether or not I needed an international license, ye took this upon yourselves to start.

I wanted to know if I can get the license within one day. And I got my answer from two helpful posters.

Thread can be closed now.. cheers

It's a notarised copy of your licence, pretty hard for something to be notarised online.

With the amount of smart phones and other technology it's a bit crazy that a piece of paper from a private company is required at.

Seems like you're clued in enough about IDP's, so a touch odd that you didn't preempt the inevitable point being made about it being a bit of racket in many cases, by simply stating your destination country in the OP.

Got it there today, cheers. Felt odd standing at the reception in the midst of a busy open office to get it done, but the abundance of attractive females in the place made the trek worth it.

    *searches for jobs with AA*
