How well do these work? I am thinking of getting one. Any recommendations? It would have to point almost directly at the gable of the house as that is the direction the signal comes from. Im in the border area getting my rte from Cairn hill in longford. Are the worth the bother or am i better putting it outside?

Outside is recommended. No one here can tell if it'll work in your attic as it depends on what the signal strength/quality is like where you locate the aerial.

The type of aerial most of your neighbours have is a good guide.

It's very much dependent on where you're located. I could get Saorview on damp string in my living room but you might need a high gain agents antenna. It's totally dependent on the proximity to a transmitter and what's in the way.

Ask the neighbours. Also maybe try a cheap plug in UHF antenna and see if you've much of a signal indoors. If that works, it might give you an idea that the attic antenna could be OK.

I've a one in Lusk pointing at 3rock/kippure, getting signal through the jack wall and gable of the neighbours.
I tried this inside first to avoid having to go on the roof, and it worked.
I've a vhf for radio muxed into the lead, and this is all further muxed into a satellite feed.

Nothing in the loft I'm afraid. Next question, anyone try one of these?
    Dish clip on aerial

Suggest you bite the bullet and go with a standard outdoor aerial e.g. this Group K aerial which will cover the existing and any future muxes after 700 MHz clearance from Cairn Hill

Maybe with a strong signal and your dish on the same side of the house as your local transmitter otherwise motorbike ashtray.

I actually have a yellow one of these which according to the map on freetv is correct for cairn hill. I also have 2 diplexers as I don't want to drill the wall again. Are these a success?

As it happens the dish is pointing in the very direction of the aerials around here Give or take a degree or two. I'd like to try one just for curiosity. :D

Absolute rubbish. I'll be returning it without delay. Well at least it confirms your suspicions.

The yellow Group B (35-53) will do for now but the new plan for Cairn Hill from around 2019 spreads the frequency allocations across Group A (21-37) and the lower part of Group B, Group K (21-48) is a wideband covering Group A and the reduced Group B band. The upper part of Group B (49-60) is to be auctioned off for 4/5G mobile in the next year or so.
