Rent allowance

Is rent allowance still a thing? My landlord told me that I can apply for rent allowance now after a year of living here with no problems or complaints, everything I've read has said that I have to go on the HAP scheme and my landlord won't accept the HAP scheme. (Yes I know he's not allowed to discriminate blah blah but I don't have any other options, I can't move home again!)

Is there any way I can avoid going on the HAP scheme yet still get help to pay the rent? I'm currently paying all the rent myself and I'm only getting lone parent payment, it's not fun or easy raising a child on €40 a week!
