For out of bundle customers paying 20-30c per minute and over 12c for a text. Virgin Media UK works very well here. With them a while now and rates were reduced the other day. It costs 1p (2c) per text and 4p (6c) per minute to all EU numbers and there's NO COST TO RECEIVE CALLS within Ireland. They're also the only UK network that accepts Irish Debit/Credit cards so you can top up online.

Handy if you make a lot of calls and texts but don't receive many.

Yes, this is a very obvious product that is missing from the Irish market. Just an affordable rates for calls and texts without needing to sign up to a plan. Something for people with very low usage, low cost, perhaps aimed more at elderly people and young kids.

An example of this is Three UK's 3/2/1 offering. 3p per minute calls, 2p per text, 1p per mb of data, pay as you go, no monthly top-up needed.

Simply nothing like that exists in Ireland. Instead nearly every pay as you go plan in Ireland costs 30c+ for calls and texts. Every company in Ireland seems to be just doing the same boring €15 to €20 all you can eat plans.

It shows either a severe lack of competition or severe lack of imagination amongst the Irish mobile phone companies.

But does this mean that everyone who calls you has to pay international rates?

Do you have a link to the plan in question?
I can't seem to find it on their website.

    No plan.

Top up and pay as you go for each call and text.

The question would be how long before Virgin will terminate your account if your majority of activity is roaming.

Three UK has a policy to disconnect after 2 month.

I've had this sim in Ireland since December 2013

It is the structure of the market. It is an oligopolistic market. When everyone in the industry makes decisions, they generally base it on their competitors offerings. There is no reason to be competitive

If you think Ireland is bad. Try the US or Germany. The only affordable price plan I could find in Germany gave me a whopping 100mb data allowance

I don't know when that was but that's not true anymore, you can get a prepaid SIM with 400 MB allowance for 8.95€ in nearly every corner shop. An additional 1 GB cost 9.95€. And that is just one sim you can get nearly everywhere.

There are loads of prepaid sim offers you can find online.

The only hassle is that you now need to show ID to get a prepaid SIM too.

You could use it in conjunction with a dual SIM phone.

Yes. I bought a phone on Amazon in 2013 and it was delivered to the Parcel Motel.
