Is the Garmin worth the price?
Would be using it for holidays abroad and for visitors when they come here

Will probably pick up the multi port phone charger since I'll be in France for the summer with 4 of us in the car.

Thanks for the heads up OP

Check the model if it can be easily and cheaply updated with new maps.

Got burned more than once with cheap GPS unit that was obsolete after 1-2 years.

I now use the phone, most decent GPS apps can be bought for Android without paying extra for the device. You just pay for maps etc.

Not to mention google maps which is free, but has its limitations.

Ad Garmin: It is LMT - Lifetime Maps and Traffic. I'm seriously tempted...

Ad Google: You can download the maps now for offline use.

Here maps can also be used on android now, without requiring a data connection. Free to download too. Still find a dedicated Satnav a much better solution when driving abroad though.

Yeah HereMaps is fantastic when travelling abroad. You can download an entire country worth of maps for free, unlike google maps which is more restrictive.

The quality of the maps with HERE are not the best though... Despite being very chatty, on my shortish commute there are three 90* turns it forgets to tell me - treats it as a straight road...

I'd use Here for general navigation i.e. to see where in a city I am but not for car navigation with directions. The major benefit of the Here app (over Google Maps anyway) is that it will put the downloaded maps on an external memory (microSD) card. Google Maps for reasons best known to themselves will only use your phone or tablet's main (RAM) memory.

If you're using Here and want NI or any part of the UK, it's best to down the whole of the UK rather than the separate 'countries', takes up a lot less space than the component parts downloaded separately.

Google maps with android auto is class... Yes data required but with roaming charges going away will be a good option

Given the price I'd say it's at least worth a punt! There's a lot of normal/non-car bluetooth speakers that work well. I have a friend that uses an Anker speaker for his car and phone that just sits below his radio. Decent easy setup!
