    Hi,

I have just cancelled my Direct Debit to Irish Water with my bank. They have advised that I also notify you of my wish to cancel the Direct Debit. Can you advise how I can do this with Irish Water.

    Thanks

    Hi Irish Water
What happens if I cancel my direct debit with my bank but don't contact you - your last post suggests that there is something else in the process?

    Hi podgeandrodge,

    Thanks for getting in touch.

As well as contacting your bank, we would advise that you contact us if you are looking to cancel your Direct Debit with Irish Water. This allows us to remove your Direct Debit details from your account and ensures that no further payments are taken via this method.

I hope this information helps. Feel free to let us know if you have any further queries.

    Kind regards,
    Amy

Thanks Amy.  I don't understand, if I've cancelled the direct debit with my bank how can any further payments be taken via this method?

But I'd like them to answer given that they have implied they can above.

Once a Direct Debit is stopped, by either contacting Irish Water or your bank, payment will no longer be taken by this method.

However, if a customer would like to ensure that the Direct Debit is no longer associated with their account and is stopped on both sides, we can assist them further.

    Kind regards,
    Mairead

If you don't inform Irish Water, they will try to take direct debit from your account as usual.
If your bank works properly, this payment should be bounced as you cancelled direct debit with the bank.

    But.
    a) in my experience I've seen banks allowing direct debits to be taken off your account even if they were cancelled (very poor service from bank's side).
    b) bank might charge fairly high fees for direct debits that bounced (was cancelled by bank, but not cancelled with payee like Irish water etc...).
