Buying new car, how much of a discount for buying a pre-registered car

Does anyone have any experience of buying a pre-reg'd car? I would expect a discount due to depreciation and the shortening of the warranty. But how much? I read the info below from a UK website and was surprised they claim discounts up to 30% can apply!



Pre-reg, or pre-registered cars, are effectively brand new cars that are heavily discounted because they have already had one registered owner.

Usually this is a dealer, but fleet managers and even manufacturers themselves have been known to pre-register cars.

They often pre-register dozens of cars at a time, and these are then sold on for as little as 70% of the list price.

Realistically, around €750-1000 on a €20-25k car. Sometimes they,l give away more margin than they would on a brand new car.
You'll obviously get a discount for buying straight too.

In most cases, the warranty will only be affected by a few weeks.

You're not really getting a discount due to depreciation as the only difference between a new one and a prereg is the number of owners on the book. Both cars will depreciate a similar amount vs the list price as soon as you need to sell it.
You're getting a discount because the manufacturer is giving the dealer a discounts, so to speak

I got one in 2009, list price was 32,500, picked it up for 27,500
However, it was one of a few cars left in the country of that model and they were phasing in the new model of the car in the August (I bought end of July). So I guess it was just good timing on my part and also that I wanted the outgoing model over the incoming model

In theory its a new car .... I wouldn't let it suade me to buying a "new" one over a pre reg especially if you get a bigger discount

I considered doing this a year ago and there was less than 10% of a difference. Probably more like 5%.

Yeah; I'd be amazed if a dealer offered anywhere near a 30% discount on a pre-reg car. I'm looking at possibly buying a Tucson later in the year, and I just can't see them knocking 10k off the price just because it's already been "owned" (on paper). I'd snap their hands off if they did though!

I don't think you will get too many pre-regged Tucsons, they have no problems selling them brand new so less or no need to pre reg any.

Agreed. I've been around two or three local-ish dealers and I haven't seen any pre-registered ones around.
