    Hi all,

We have a 1990 VW Westfalia camper van and we noticed that 1st gear was constantly slipping out and couldn't drive it in 1st at all. Brought it to garage who looked at it who said gear box needs to be changed. He recommended to enquire in Naas Gearboxes who told me the vehicle was too old for them. Our garage thought the official VW dealerships locally would be really expensive and to ask around on forums etc. The van has been a lifeline for our family (especially since our youngest was diagnosed with a severe nut allergy and we don't really eat out in takeaways etc anymore) and don't really have a huge amount to spend so was just looking for any suggestions/places to go or if someone had to do something similar themselves, thanks in advance for any help,

VW dealership mightn't even be able to get the parts.

I'd ask Cosy Classics for advice:
Address: Unit 1, Block 642, Greenogue Business Park, Rathcoole, Co. Dublin
    Phone:(01) 401 6055

Also ask on Type 2 Ireland Forum:
    http://www.type2ireland.org/

The td gearbox is very sought after will be hard to find one.

Aidan Talbot in the UK would have the parts if you can find someone to fit them: http://www.aidantalbot.com/

LHW is a transverse gearbox from a car, even if you got a longitudinal gearbox and fabricated new driveshafts the engine in the t25 is behind the gearbox so 99.9% of gearboxes would give you 1 forward and 5 reverse gears.

$$$ but get reverse cut gears , should be a few making them :

    http://www.subarugears.com/index.html

These transmissions can be used with rear-mounted Subaru, VW / Porsche boxer engines for 5 forward gears.
    • Add a Subaru engine and 2WD 5 speed transmission to a Beetle, Kombi or Vanagon without cutting the torsion bar.
    • Add a Subaru 2WD 5 speed transmission to your aircooled VW motor (or other motors) using an adaptor plate and flywheel.
    • Add a complete Subaru engine and 4WD transmission / drivetrain to a vehicle.
    • Replace your older/broken VW / Porsche 4/5 speed with a Subaru 5 speed.

Sorry, should have read that more closely.

Try eircooled.com. Lots of t25 owner drivers on there, and they
no doubt will point you in the right direction.

Cant have you driving backwards at70mph now can we:)

For enough money you can put a square peg in a round hole alright,

spend $ and time sourcing gearbox
spend $$ on reverse cut gears
spend more $$ getting gearbox rebuilt
spend more $$ on an making adapter plate to bolt it up
spend more $$ on machining input shaft, flywheel spacers
spend more $$ fabricating custom driveshafts
spend more $ fabricating custom gearbox mountings
spend more $ fabricating 8ft long custom gear linkage

and be rewarded with a sum of the parts which is a worth a fraction of their cost :D

The op says they don't have a lot of money to spend.

    a) harder to find one of those than the original
    b) its longer than the standard gear box so you need to cut, modify and weld the cross members or move the engine.

If you did want to convert to a different box, I would go with the upside down t12 passat/a4 box - very easy to obtain those for little money, any problem in the future bang another one in.

I had a T25 that the input shaft bearings went in, I went through all the options before deciding the money was better invested in a van 15-20 years younger.
