Car problem - Ford Mondeo 2004

    Hey guys,

I'm having some car problems.. Yesterday while driving the car, my clutch got stuck and i wasn't able to change the gears or accelerate. I turned off my car and switched it back on after 10 minutes and it started working but i was still having some problems with the pick up. Anyway as my house was near, i drove it anyway and parked it in my parking space.

Today morning when i tried to drive it, i cant accelerate above 20-30k. I barely got a km away from my home and had to park it at the petrol station as i had to travel very far and i don't think i would get very far on it.

So any ideas what would be my best and cheapest option?

I already paid a lot of money in January on this car to a service station to fix it and he charged me 1,100 for it. I've called them again and they said they'll have a look at the work which was done earlier and give me a quote on it.

Another place i called gave me a quote of 450 (everything included, towing + parts + labor).

Another guy i called said 50 for towing, 150-200 labor and the rest for parts.

Im out in Dublin 15, so any suggestion guys?

    Which engine is it
What do you mean by clutch stuck
What work was done for €1,100
Is the engine warning light on

    - 1.8 Petrol
    - The clutch was loose yesterday, like it was going up and down, but it felt like there was no pressure in it if you know what i mean.. But it was okay after i shut down my car and turned it back on after a few minutes
    - Mostly the brake pads and some other stuff was replaced. There was some strange noise coming form the brakes and that was fixed. I cant recall exactly what was done but i don't think any work was done on the clutch. I have the bill in the car, i will check it again to see exactly what work was done
    - Yes the engine warning light is on, but its been on since a few months now. I just assumed it was because the fuel cap was not working properly (wild guess since i was hearing an air like noise whenever i opened up the fuel cap for filling up at a station)

Also an update, the guy i called is giving me the following quotes.. they seem a little high to me:

    - 2 Peice Clutch €210 + VAT
    - Hydronic Bearing €127 + VAT
    - Dual Mass €395 + VAT

He goes on to say that probably we would need only the 2 piece clutch kit as the other parts can be fixed.

I think he's quoting me way too high for the clutch?

It doesn't matter how much they charged for the service if that didn't involve work on the clutch. Also, a routine service (i.e. you didn't bring it in for a particular problem) will never include the clutch. Never think that a service is the mechanic waving a magic wand over the car that will fix each and every problem with it.
How much mileage is on the car? A clutch is a consumable item and will wear out within x miles. €1100 all in is a bit steep, better shop around.
But one very important point: Whatever you do, get EVERYTHING changed! If you cheap out now, you will regret it later when the next component fails, because labour is a very high proportion of the overall price.

    PS:
your engine warning light could be a different problem, get the codes read! otherwise you will have another potentially catastrophic failure looming. The air rushing in is normal when you open the fuel cap and I don't see any way it would bring about a check engine light.

The clutch price is 450 which is t too bad the 1100 was for brake pads and something else
Ok get your codes read first and see how much that will set you back before spending on a new clutch

    OK, I see.
As for the codes, absolutely! Since it's a Ford, OP could get a €5 Bluetooth OBD dongle from Ebay, put Forscan on his phone (unfortunate name :) ) and check the error himself, at least he'll have an idea. This will even give the errors in cleartext. The Lite version is free and still reads almost anything.

I had two of these over the years, both 02 1.8 petrol.
Engine management light came on(orange light) in both about the 85k- 90k miles, EGR valve was stuck/ occasionally working.
First one i had cleaned in a garage and noticed the difference straight away, sold that on with 125k on the clock and it was driving well, kept the lower mileage one and cleaned the valve myself when it started to happen.
The clutch was going on this with about 90 k on it when i got rid of it last year.
Coil pack went on the first one too, faulty lead, car would be working fine and then lose power and couldn't accelerate

    Update:

So i got a guy to come tow it. He checked the car, turns out the clutch is gone. If i press the clutch and change the gear and then leave the clutch, the car doesn't shut down (as it normally would).

Anyway he said he'll open it up and see whats wrong with it and then let me know how much its gonna cost.

450 would be the average price of getting the clutch done on one of those.

Out of interest I'd love to know specifically what that 1100 in repairs was for.

Me too must have been a lot more than a service and brake pads or at least I hope so

Anyways guys i got the clutch kit replaced. Total cost around 520 (including towing and labor and parts :()

Anyhow i have a new problem now. The oil light is coming on randomly. Usually at low speeds and while making turns but its completely random.. sometimes it comes up sometimes it doesnt and it goes away after a few seconds.

    Anything to be worried about?

    Jesus.

Firstly, Do you know how to check the engine for oil? Using the dipstick under the bonnet? (When the engine is cold)

DO NOT DRIVE it until you have checked oil level and topped up if necessary.
If oil pressure light flickering persists with oil at correct level.... potential major ruh roh.

If oil light problems go away after topup - Continue to keep a very close eye on oil level for the next few weeks.

    Thanks guys.

I've checked the dip stick already and topped up. However i don't see anything on the dip stick even after putting on 0.5litre of engine oil

You'll need to put more in so.
