    Master Carpenter 14-1 2.40

Should improve for its two runs this year. Consistent last summer in good company. I think it should be up to speed now and be capable of competing here for victory. Raced against the favourite for this last time out, was making ground on Western Hymn as it was losing ground, held up that day.
I expect a strong showing here

    1 pt win 14-1

The 6 furlong handicap at Chester, 3 non-runners all drawn high. It's an absolute joke how trainers are allowed to get away with this time and again at Chester.

4.20 Chester the favs are all drawn wide which is a very tough place to win over course and distance. Eric Alston does alright with his 2 year olds especially at Chester where he is 2-9 in the last 4 years and runs Redrosezorro today. He has the plum draw in stall 1 and might be able to outrun his odds. 25/1 just gone but 22/1 still available with 2 firms.

After writing a report on each horse but deleted it by mistake my fancies for today.Emirates Arline 9/2,Outback Blue 33/1,She's Rosanna 40/1,Still on Top 11/1,Novelty Seeker 50/1.The Group 3 is as bad a race of this quality you could find.US Army Ranger should bet this lot by the length of the straight if he is going to beat Midterm 5/1 in the Derby. This will be an excuse for the layers to shorten him for Derby even if he beats this lot of rubbish.Ryan Moore rides against Aiden O Brien tomorrow in the Ormonde stakes with Dartmouth and the 7/4 with PP should be taken big time.

If I were you, I'd be very pissed off with Seamie for coming off the rail there.

What a disgrace that is. An absolute joke from Heffernan.

No balls from Nick Luck to tackle him on the ride on the 2nd place. Best horse in the race didnt win.

Hardly a surprise that Coolmore employed a pacemaker for their main Derby hope in a race with no pace. He's been used as a pacemaker before so you have to take that into consideration when placing a bet. The horse only ran straight under hands and heels and would have clattered the favourite if Seamie continued to use the whip.

I'ld be a fan of O'Brien but that was a fix. Horse in 2nd not ridden on merit (no bet). Nothing will happen in enquiry.

Channel 4 didn't want to ask the straight question & O'Brien turned to all the press to ask them questions during a tv interview. Body language made it look like they're unhappy with their Derby no.1

    @Uxiant

Ah give over, he could have switched to his left and leathered him with a few to win by a cosy length

    no bet

if the stewards are looking for a word opposite of "Excessive" use of the whip

:moderate, cheap, close, economical, essential, inexpensive, low, mild, necessar,y needed, reasonable, sensible, insufficient underdone

    2 slaps of the whip

Whitewash by Channel 4 there. They seem to be selectively ignoring the fact that Seamie blatantly let Ryan Moore up his inside off the home turn.

    no action taken by stewards

I remember Pat Cosgrave getting a 6 month ban in Meydan for the exact same thing. Came off the rail to let a stablemate through. In Meydan, he was probably lucky not to have his hand chopped off :pac:

That wasn't the same thing. Cosgrave physically moved off the rail. The rail at Chester moves away, Seamie didnt

Same thing to me, he had been looking behind him, he knew exactly where US Army Ranger was, so he gave up the rail, stopped riding for a few strides. He was probably expecting that US Army Ranger would go away at that stage.

It wasn't the same thing. Most horse move off the rail at Chester in the straight . Have a look at the other races.

Everyone knew that the second was going to be used as a pacemaker so if you backed it you deserve what you got. The second wont be mapped in any decent race in future and will probably turn up for De Kock in Dubai next winter. Id say the winner is a far better horse who is inexperienced.

Two for later on 5.50 Wincanton Lightentertainment has been dropping down the weights needs to bounce back 9-1 worth chancing tonight.
8.00 Clonmel Face Value 9-1 won race last year looks perfect for tonight. gla

Bit surprised to see Fahey's horse drifting out to 7/1 in the 4:55 at Chester. This one was only a length behind the favourite Reflektor last time out. Think with the switch to good ground this time and a 4lb penalty for Reflektor, that Celebration can out-perform this time out.

The horse wasn't being used as pacemaker. I'm not sure where you've got that from? And how everyone knew before the race? If it was pacemaker then they did a pretty appalling job because they went very steady early on.

Combination of PD being better than they thought he was by nearly defying the penalty and USAR not being as good as they thought he was. PD has ran to its merits (well at least intended to be I believe) but Heffernan was, not for the first time, caught badly on the hop and it looks atrocious to anyone watching who might not follow the sport that closely.

    http://www.britishhorseracing.com/race-info/stewards-reports/

    Race 3 - 3:10pm MBNA CHESTER VASE (CLASS 1) (Group 3)
The Stewards held an enquiry to consider why Seamie Heffernan, the rider of PORT DOUGLAS (IRE), placed second, had appeared to allow his mount to drift off the rail from 2 furlongs out around the bend into the straight to the benefit of the winner, US ARMY RANGER (IRE), ridden by Ryan Moore who got a run up the inside to win by a short head. They interviewed Heffernan and Aidan O’Brien, the trainer. Having heard their evidence and viewed recordings of the race, the Stewards noted the rider’s explanation that his instructions were to make the running as the horse was a staying type who would be suited to front running tactics, and would be running in the race on his own merits. He added that he had stepped up the pace from halfway down the back straight and had always intended to take the middle line to avoid getting his horse unbalanced by “dragging him around the bend”. He therefore gradually came off the rail. He further added that he was unaware of the position of US ARMY RANGER (IRE) when coming off the false rail. The Stewards also noted the trainer’s explanation that he had removed the blinkers for today’s race, as PORT DOUGLAS (IRE) was stepping up ½ a mile in trip and he didn’t want the colt over racing. The trainer further added that his instructions to Heffernan were to make the running if he could and stated that he always leaves it to the rider regarding where to kick for home.

The Stewards further enquired into Seamie Heffernan’s ride on PORT DOUGLAS (IRE) in the home straight where the colt appeared to be tenderly ridden in the final 100metres. They interviewed the rider and the trainer. They also received a report from the Veterinary Officer who confirmed that there were no post race abnormalities, and observations from the Handicapper. The rider again confirmed his instructions in that as the colt broke well and that he is a staying type, he was quite happy to make the running. The rider further added that the trainer always leaves it to him where to kick in a race. In explaining his ride in the final furlong, the rider stated that he had used his whip twice in his right hand and both times the colt lugged left in towards US ARMY RANGER (IRE). He therefore felt it prudent to put his whip down and to straighten up PORT DOUGLAS (IRE), as if he continued to use his whip he would have interfered with US ARMY RANGER (IRE). He therefore gave a hands and heels ride to the line. When asked about the amount of effort he made in the final 100metres, Heffernan stated that this is his usual style of riding and that, in his opinion, he had obtained the best possible placing. The trainer again confirmed these instructions, stating that he was satisfied that the ride given was in accordance with these instructions. Having heard their evidence and viewed recordings of the race the Stewards noted their explanations.

My favourite Heffernan moment was when he accidentally won on Bondi Beach, beating his stablemate who was backed all day. "Nudged out to lead" or something similar was the in running comment.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,107 ✭✭✭HarshOstrich

Just saw the replay on the news and it didn't look to me like Seamie didn't try and win.
Like he said when he whipped him he went left and when he went just hands and heels the horse responded well to it and nearly won.

Folks, got the place pot up in Clonmel tonight. It paid €320.40. I couldn't believe it paid that much. Didn't expect it at all. Judging on the results does that amount seem right?

Backed it that day. Beat his odds on stable mate Bantry Bay. He blatantly tried to lose the race the way he did today. Its sickening.
