Removing wallpaper from 'taped and jointed' wall - bad idea?

    Hi all,

I hope this is the right forum for this question - we're not doing this particular work ourselves; this seemed like the best forum to find a more experienced perspective - thanks.

Recently bought a (cheaply built) house, which is 'taped and jointed' rather than plastered internally. (I.e. there isn't a layer of plaster over the plasterboard).

The bedrooms have wallpaper. We want to repaint.

    - One painter has advised and quoted us to: strip off the wallpaper, finish any imperfections underneath with a combination of sanding and filler, then add horizontal lining paper if needed (seems likely as there are a lot of imperfections showing through the current wallpaper, so there are probably a lot of dense underneath), and then paint over that.

    - Another general contractor has said that is a bad idea, that you're still going to get the same uneven finish showing through the new paint / lining paper, and that stripping the wallpaper risks damaging the plasterboard cover underneath it. He has suggested instead putting up a new thin plasterboard (9mm) on the interior walls (good noise insulation properties) and insulating plasterboard on the exterior walls, and plaster over. This would leave a smooth finish and add insulation, but take up space.

My main question is when you have a 'taped and jointed' setup, which has been wallpapered over, is it reasonable to strip it? Or will the underlying plasterboard be damaged? If we did strip would it make more sense to then add plaster, instead of lining paper? Will the lining paper just create more problems down the line, or fail?

I know fairly little about these things, so any advice is welcome!

    Thanks,
    Fergal

Both options can work. I think some of the plasterboard will come off when you try to strip the wallpaper. A good painter should be able to fill in all the underlying imperfections. I think they use filler to hide the joints between the lining paper. It's not something I have had done. Skimming will obviously give you that perfect smooth finish if you don't mind losing the little space. Finding a good plasterer can be more of a challenge.
