They are pretty much the same car, both share the same chassis and engine. I've owned both, the Focus has a more sportier drive while the S40 is more refined with a more upmarket cabin. 1.6d is not the best engine in terms of reliability so a full service history is a must and even at that they can be problematic. The 1.6d also felt more sluggish in the S40 than it did in the Focus. Personally I'd opt for the 2.0d in either over the 1.6d again.

Thanks. Im emigrating next june 12 months please god so i want something i can sell on. A 2litre wont move unfortunately... Id say ill wait until a good version of either comes up and buy one or the other. I can remap them up to 140bhp easily enough

Not a wise thing to do on an engine that already suffers reliability problems :P

I had an s40 with that engine as a company car before, slow as hell and it used to go through tyres like mad (tyres weren't cheap either). Boot and rear passenger area are also tiny. No way I'd ever buy one for those reasons although it's a lovely car to look at.

Thats a very misinformed opinion

The Focus comes with a 1.8 diesel aswell which was a bit better than the 1.6 although I'd go for a 2.0 S40

€710 tax a year. I'm sure most buyers will be looking for a 1.6 in Ireland :p

It's 673-710 on almost all similar age diesel cars. VW Passats, Golfs, Jettas, Audi A4s, BMW 320ds, none of those are difficult to sell because of the tax bracket.

Also many people who look into it a bit will read a lot of horror stories about the 1.6 PSA engine and avoid it. I wouldn't think there would be much of a resale advantage on either these days.
