Fibre broadband on split line

    Hi,
My landline is a split line (was 1 line left and 2 houses being built so they split the line between the 2 houses). Hence, both houses can get calls but neither can get broadband over the landline even though older houses on the same road can (individual lines).
I know the local exchange is being upgraded for fibre in the next few weeks and my question is, should I be able to get fibre broadband over the split line even though I can't get it with the current system?
I've tried contacting Eir and nobody has a clue.
    Thanks

Nope. Carrier lines have to be removed for any DSL services. Eir have been removing them in recent years where practical but its not always so.

So I take it mine is a carrier line??

Can I ask Eir to change the line? Is there much cost involved in that? I'm around quarter of a mile from where the line was split and about 2.5 miles to exchange.

If there's a spare pair at the split then its an easy fix, if there's not then it won't happen.

You can request a dedicated line through your current provider, OpenEir will decide whether to entertain it or not.

Very unlikely there's anything spare at the split or they wouldn't have split it in the first place.

Would I have to pay for the dedicated line?

Thanks for the help (and sorry for all the stupid questions!). I contacted Eir by phone twice and got passed to about 5 different departments with no answer. I tried their webchat and was told that it would definitely work now but I don't think they understood what I meant by split line, and when I said that I was told not to insult them!!

They're rare now so most people you speak to won't have a clue.

There's no cost, its either free or it doesnt happen. Its possible a neighbor had a fax line that they've since dropped etc that would leave an unused pair. If I were you I'd keep an eye for a local eir technician (not a contractor) and have a word. They'll know the lay of the land and are usually helpful blokes.

At that range you won't be able to get eir Fibre no matter what state your copper is in. Sorry. :(
