How long do you have to declare a claim for?

I had a claim just under 3 years ago and my insurance is up for renewal. I vaguely remember seeing one or two companies before that only ask for a claim in the last 3 years to be declared with most asking for 5. Anyone know who only requires the 3 years?

I believe Aviva only ask for 3. Axa were 3 but asked for four last time I got a quote from them, perhaps it's increasing across the board.
If you go through a brokers they may ask for 5 just so they have all the info if any companies require more than 3, doesn't necessarily mean that all the companies they approach require it though.

Agreed but I'm sure I read somewhere (could have been another thread here) that some companies now will leave the question open ended?

I have seen it asked "have you ever had any motor claims" etc. without specifying a time scale.

Have called several in the last couple of weeks. All asked for in the last 4/5 years. Would still tell of any claim though, even if longer ago.

If in doubt, tell it. It has not affected any quote yet.
