I currently hold a learner permit and am curious about something. I know I must have someone in the car with me at all times who has held their full licence for 2 years, but my question is - do they have to sit in the front passenger seat?

    Thanks.

Could you point me in the direction of the legislation that states this? I couldn't find it anywhere. Thanks.

What use would they be in the back?

Of course they would be better in the front I just want to know what the law actually states.

the whole point in being in the front is that they can supervise, if you will, the learner driver.

I understand the point of why they should be in the front I'm trying to find out if it's specifically mentioned in legislation.

Lots of details aren't explicitly mentioned in legislation. I don't see mention of where the accompanying driver has to sit in that bit I've linked. However, good luck convincing a garda at the roadside if you're pulled over. It seems a ridiculous question to me.

I'd scratch my head at the purpose of quite a few laws but surely ensuring a fully licenced driver sits in the front seat alongside provisional driver to assist for any potential supervision is probably one of the most obviously appropriate and self explanatory laws? Why even question the granular detail of where, why and prove such a rule is in place?

would the back passenger seat not give a better position to observe the drivers observation? ...

No, because the person in the back passenger seat would have to be leaning dangerously forward the whole time, a bad position to be in in case of an accident. It would be very unlikely that the back-seat passenger would be wearing a proper seatbelt as well.

Also, has any driver ever taken advice graciously from a "back seat driver"??:D

if that was the case then driving testers would sit in the back.
