The aircraft were launched from RAF Coningsby on Monday night to identify an unresponsive civilian aircraft, the Ministry of Defence said. Air France confirmed that the unresponsive plane had been one of their aircraft which had a radio communication problem but it later landed safely guided by the Typhoon jets. An RAF spokesman said: 'Quick reaction alert Typhoon aircraft were launched from RAF Coningsby to identify an unresponsive civilian aircraft. Communications were re-established and the aircraft has been safely landed.'

Looks like this was a Cityjet RJ.

This is interesting as right now the UK is discussing increasing the maximum fine for this sort of event from 2500 pounds to "UNLIMITED", if this change is accepted, I wonder just how much 2 Typhoons cost per hour?

This happens all the time. Just the other day Hungary sent up fighters to escort a BA from Dubai due to lack of comms.

They sent up a refueler too.

Supposedly a few broken windows in Leeds from the sonic boom.

I wonder who pays them bills?

What does Ireland do if this happens? Which it must as coming from the Atlantic they must forget to change frequencies. Do we send up the kite?

What exactly happens when the typhoons intercept it? Like it is hand signals or morse code :pac:.
If contact can't be recovered what happens and how does a safe landing be carried out?

1 fighter high & behind the airliner, 1 comes alongside the airliner and makes visual contact with the cockpit. At this point the flight crew go "oh ****" and realise they missed a radio call. They then go onto the 'guard' freq (?) and make contact with the fighter, or follow his/her hand signals to descend/follow instructions.

It's all listed in here, but also in crew Jeppesens (maybe)

Read a story about a similar incident involving a small private aircraft. Fighter was scrambled in the US. Visual contact made and noted the pilots were slumped over unresponsive.

Most likely depressurisation rendered them unconscious. Fighters followed it until it ran out of fuel and crashed in a field with instructions to shoot it down if it was likely to descend on a highly populated area.

    Grim.

    Payne Stewart Plane Crash
Is probably the one that you are talking about.

    Helios B737

For the Helios crash, a number of airline officials were jailed as they were blamed for cutting corners on safety operations while also saying that they failed to act on advice that the pilots did not meet the necessary aviation standards
