Mondeo or Superb 162

    Guys
Thinking of changing the OH's car for a new 162
She has narrowed in down to 2.
Mondeo titanium 1.5dci or Superb ambition 1.6tdi (if it were my own car I would come down on spec to go to 2.0ltr engine in both but she'll be driving it and she likes the higher spec)
Mondeo is around 1k less to change she currently has an Octavia elegance
    Any thoughts
    3 kids 25kms per year
What is the 1.5tcdi engine like. She has driven both and likes both.
What is likely to have a better resale value in 3 years allowing of course for the 1k difference to change now.
    Thanks

Would the spec on the Superb not be better, and much bigger rear seats handier if you have child seats?

Resale value is likely to be rubbish for all cars in 3 years time as the market will be flooded with PCP returns coming to the end of their 3 year term.

I'd say a Superb will worth more in 3 years time than a similar Mondeo. What about the Passat? If the Technology Pack is still available for €161 then it's good value or maybe go with the Business Edition.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,127 ✭✭✭✭Gael23

Mondeos were always poor on resale values so depending on how long you intend to keep it, that will be a factor. If it was me I'd go with the Superb, wouldn't be my pick of the market but out of those two choices.

    Thanks Guys,

Gael what would your pick be? Have a Mazda 6 myself from work so looking at something different.

Bazz she's not a massive fan of the Passat but she probably hasn't actually sat in one so might be worth a call to see.

AD its a Titanium Mondeo versus the ambition on the superb which is one step up from the base model so spec is similar. The superb prob feels more plush for want of a better description.

The Passat and Superb are practically the same car so very similar when you sit in and drive them both.

1.5 TDCi engine in the Mondeo is new so very unlikely to have many long term reviews. A well kitted Insignia could probably be got for good money but they are pretty long in the tooth these days and resale will be poor in 3 years time. The only other option is the Mazda6 which you already have.

With 3 kids and for that sort of money I'd be looking at something like the Ford Smax or a small SUV.

I'd be having. Look at the Passat this the €161 offer is still on. Also small SUVs with 3 kids would be handy but I know some people don't like those.

Not a Mazda 6 diesel anyway - unless they have now sorted the engine.

Will get her to have a look at the Passat and take for a drive. She had kind of drawn a line through it without actually looking at one to be fair.

She def doesn't want a people carrier completely out of the question. Image issue:rolleyes:

She drove a few small SUV's Kuga & Tucson but didn't really have any great liking for them. She would prefer the large saloon option over the small SUV types. Now a large SUV she'd like but out of budget unfortunately

Engine in the Mondeo is very good - had a few people drive them and been surprised to find it's a 1.5 and not a 2.0. Probably edges it slightly over the Superb in that respect, but I think I'd be going for the Skoda.

Seats in the Mondeo are very good, but for the top of the range model, it's just a bit empty on the inside - large touchscreen looks nice but it's not the most user friendly thing. Much easier to use in the Skoda and should have the Android Auto / Apple Carplay - if it's not standard then it can be unlocked by the dealer.

In addition to what has been already said here I find the Mondeo overweight. It looks damn heavy, with Skoda being much more proportional.

I would however consider an Octavia 2.0TDI DSG Style rather than Superb 1.6 Ambition.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,470 ✭✭✭JoeA3

I think the Mondeo is a better looker (on the outside at least), but that may not matter so much here.

Personally I'd take another look at the Passat. The Highline Business Edition has all the toys you could possibly want, its a better looking, better proportioned looking car than the Superb imo... and will probably have the edge on resale.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,470 ✭✭✭JoeA3

Another suggestion - there's a new VW Tiguan coming soon... from what I've seen of it, it's a very impressive wagon. More Passat proportioned than it's smaller predecessor. With 3 kids, it might be a more appropriate choice.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 364 ✭✭PN14

    Thanks for feedback guys

Will get her to look at the Passat. Tiguan is out she prefers a saloon. The Octavia is out too she has had a few of them and while very happy with them I think she wants a change.

If it was my own car I was changing I would be looking at a VRS Octavia.

What about a Peugeot 508 or a Kia Optima. Both nice cars

Do like the exterior of the Optima but just think the interior lets it down. Looks dated and a bit behind all the other cars in the range.

Would prefer the i40 to the kia as an overall package and she is going to look at one over the weekend.

The 508 doesn't really do it for me. I don't know why just think it looks a bit odd from some angles. Also be wary of depreciation on it.

Are you talking about the original Optima or the new 2016 one? The original Optima's interior was a bit of a dog's dinner. However they launched a new Optima late in 2015 and the interior is much improved over the old car. Exterior looks more of an evolution of the old model though.

Bob gives a quick review of the new Optima here:

The i40 is long in the tooth now and really needs to be replaced with a more up to date model. I wouldn't consider one unless there was a serious discount and even at that I'd have to think about it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 364 ✭✭PN14

Thanks Bazz always like Bobs reviews.

Was talking about the 2016 optima I still think the interior is a bit mewh.

The i40 has a facelift model out in July/aug so was thinking of that but from pictures on line it is a minorish facelift changes to the front nose lights etc.

Still doesn't have full leather as standard and slightly more expensive too!!

Can't see it beating a Superb on resale, they're like hens teeth at the moment.

The Kia Optima is newer than the i40. I do agree the interior is boring think Kia were trying to make it look kind of like a BMW inside. I think the interior in the old Optima was better looking.

Partial leather seats are over 2k extra on the Mondeo Titanium.

Which is utterly f*****g ludicrous! Retro Fit Leather could be done for less than 2k - probably a good bit less as can get an S-Max done for under 2k.

Went with Mondeo in the end. Couldn't do a deal with dealer on the superb he wasn't for budging on price.

Mondeo Titanium with winter pack and tinted windows, colour - deep impact blue, ready for collection the 1st of July :). Herself is looking forward to it.

    Thanks for input.

Best of luck with it. I really think Ford did a brilliant job with the new Mondeo.

Out of all those sized cars it'd be the first one I would have had!

    De gustibus non est disputandum...

But me thinks that with the HB/Liftback the designers did miss the balance a bit. Contrary to the previous generation, this one looks a bit too heavy at the back...

Didn't see this thread until now! Uncle had a 151 1.6 Zetec, upgraded to a 161 1.5 Titanium. Very satisfied with it.

Even though the 1.5 adds only 5 hp it feels like a better suited engine, pulls well.

Lots of nice toys with the titanium over the zetec, especially the touch screen, which eradicated the plethora of buttons on the lower specs.

The large column diving driver and passenger covered in that piano black works well too.

The cost of the leather is a big annoyance. I've seen very few cars with the upgraded 19" twin 5 spoke wheels, which suit the styling better. Near all are the 17's

    Aren't VAG diesels bad news?

p.s. I haven't driven a new Mondeo in ages, but they look pretty good imho.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,360 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

Only if you have VW shares. :D

Other than that they still make some of the best diesel engines available on the market.

Congratulations, the new Mondeo is a lovely car. I have a soft spot for them and it was on my shortlist last year before I settled on the A4.

Lovely shade of blue too. Happy motoring!

PN14, what was your negotiation experience with the Skoda dealer? Were you trading the Octty or going cash?

Was there literally no budging on price?

Herself has been driving Octavia's since 2004. Have had 6 or 7 in that time so have been a good customer. Skoda dealer gave a price on the change and there wasn't much budging him on his offer. To be fair it mightn't have been a bad offer however the cost to change to the Mondeo over the superb was too much to ignore. I would have accepted a price difference between the 2 and was prepared to pay more to change to the superb but when the dealer wasn't for moving I did the deal for he Mondeo. She's vey happy with purchase so far but its early days yet. After been in the one brand car for 16 years its nice to be in something completely different as regards cabin layout etc and does make the change to a new car feel more like a change if you know what I mean.

    Thanks PN14

Considering a superb for this time next year. Will probably be a cash deal. Another year into the design and a cash deal might see some flexibility

    What engines were involved?

Mondeo kicks off with a 1.5TDCI 120bhp 2.0 units are way more powerful.

    i40 has a 1.7 which has between 119bhp and 141bhp.

From the reviews I've read on here from people driving the i40, it could be a rocket ship and I still wouldn't be buying one.
