I'm looking to go to the Strasbourg Xmas market in Dec. Getting to Starsbourg looks a pain in the arse. Anyone been and able to advise an easy option. I was looking into flying in Frankfurt, but the bus from Frankfurt to Strasbourg is 100 euro.

    Cheers!

Drop an e-mail to your local MEP, they go there for a meeting of the European Parliament every month.

I'm sure they'd be happy to let a constituent share the ride in the chauffeur driven Merc.

What is €100, one way/return, one person, two, a family?

If the hitching a ride with your local FGer doesn't work out there are direct TGV services from Charles de-Gaulle to Strasbourg that currently take 2h20-2h50. The full High speed line to Strasbourg is due to open in the next few months so the journey times will be less by December.

Prices are variable, cheaper the earlier you book but SNCF fares are only released 3-4 months in advance and services beyond June on that route are not currently available with the new line opening unconfirmed.

I would expect if you get in early that a return fare far less than €100 per person at times you want would be possible.

Ex used to work there a fair bit and yes it's a pain to get there. They used to fly into CDG and get a connecting flight to Strasbourg. The timings of the Lufthansa flight never suited them. It's not a cheap place to get to or to stay iirc.

You could take a train from Frankfurt airport. They don't sell tickets that far in advance but I think it would be around 40 € one way. You can also book entire trips including hotel via Bahn.de, I've done it before and it worked out quite cheap.

Maybe look at travelling to Basel and getting the train from there? Ryanair fly there from Dublin. Trains from Basel SBB station are regular enough, cost about 27CHF and take 1:18.

Cheers for the replies. The 100 euro from Frankfurt was one person return. Don't think I'd pay that for a 2 hour bus journey on principal.

It's very annoying not being able to book a train 6/7 months in advance. Basel and Paris look the two best options. At this stage I'd be leaning for Basel!

Why Strasbourg particularly? Plenty of good Christmas markets in Budapest, Vienna and other more easily accessible cities. Vienna in particular is lovely to wander about in December, Budapest too but we were just a little early for the markets.

Trains from Frankfurt Airport to Strasbourg take just over 2 hours and cost €60 per person on bahn.com. Tickets can be booked up to 90 days in advance. These tickets are flexible, i.e. you can take any train that day on the route.

There is also a new direct TGV from Brussels to Strasbourg which takes just short than 4 hours. Check out the SNCF Website.

We were at the Vienna markets last year. They were brilliant.

We're looking for a city neither of us has visited before, pretty much decided on Strasbourg before we realized it's difficult to get to.

There seems to be the option of flying via Manchester to Stuttgart - Skyscanner showing fares of €140 in December with Ryanair and Eurowings with a tgv from there to Strasbourg but to be honest I'd reckon CDG with a direct TGV is your best option.

There was another bumper thread on Christmas markets, might be worth checking other options in that.

Luxemburg to Strasbourg or Berne to Strasbourg, or just go to another market like Munich, etc.

As another poster asked why Strasbourg specifically?

Seat 61.com is great for train journeys.
