Which ignition coil should I buy?

    Try and find out who manufactures the part for Volkswagen and get that brand. It could be Bosch but I'm not sure. I would stick to something OEM though so maybe get a price from the VW dealership first?

    I'd get the Bosch. That's probably what's in the Polo anyway.

    Is it 1.2 lt 3 cylinder engine ?

    If so, they are prone to problems in particular cylinder valves causing misfires by design.

    Hopefully this is not the case and a new coil fixes your problem.

    Yeah 1.2 , 3 cylinder.

    Engine warning light came on, started flashing, car started chugging and felt like it was accelerating and slowing down at same time.

    I called AA and the guy came out and did a Bluetooth diagnosis. He reckoned it was one of the three ignition coils. I remembered there was one in the boot when I bought the car. Wasn't sure if it was a new part or one that has been taken out and just left in boot.

    He put it in anyway and warning light went off and car seemed to be running normally. About 10 mins later the problem happened again.

    Is logical next step to try a new ignition coil? Or should I bring it to a garage?

    Usually there's loads of knowledgeable VW heads round here. Dunno what's going on today.

    Considering you noticed a sudden change* I think, in my amateur opinion, that a new coil would be worth it. Bosch should do. Maybe plugs as well shur, when were they done do ya know?

    If the problem persists you need to get a more in depth scan than your typical bluetooth job can manage.

    Let us know how you get on. I think the polo that I posted a thread about is in a worse situation than you.

    I'd change your plugs first, then go after your coils.

    I bought a new coil and tried it. Again, it worked fine for ten minutes before the same thing happened again. Flashing warning light followed by chugging and struggling.

    Dropped it into the mechanic. He just called me back with the worst news.

    He ruled out the coils, injector and plugs and was 90% sure it is the ECU. He said it would cost between €700-1000 to buy a new one. He said they can be sent the UK to be repaired and this costs about €500. He wasn't sure about the repair route though.

    I'm pretty devastated. Can't afford to replace the car but not sure I can even afford to repair it. :(
