    Hi
Hopefully getting my third uk import this week but its been a while so i forget...

Do i switch my own insurance onto the car for the drive down,? How does that work? Call my conpany when i get the keys with the ni reg?

Can i pay with my aib visa debit card? The dealer says he takes debit card. Does it make sense to do it that way at all,? Visa will set the exchange rate but at least im not carrying a few thousand pounds in cash

    Thanks for your help
    J

If your doing it on a weekday the changeover can normally be done over the phone, if over the weekend have it done beforehand. The driving other cars exemption will not cover a UK reg car so no point in trying to get a friend to drive it back.

Your AIB Visa debit card will only be able to make a payment of €2500 in one day. A bank draft is probably the best solution, verify with the dealer that they will accept this. I am not sure how easy it is to have a bank draft refunded if you decide to not buy the car, check this with the bank before going through with it.

If it was me and I knew the car was 100% for me and priced at say £8000 I would have the draft made out for £7000 and I'd bring £1000 in cash and try to bargain the dealer down to £500-750 off the price, you won't be able to do this if you have the draft made out for the full £8000.

The car is only 1795 gbp. I'm a doctor mate not an electrician or a teacher like

So i could potentially get it on my debit card?
And then when i do get the keys ring my company asap and do the swap for insurance you reckon.

The guy wont deal at all at that price which is fair enough as its actually a very good price

Yes it should work fine on the card, be no harm calling the bank to just verify that the €2500 limit is UK also. Call your insurer before you travel up to be sure they will cover the car on UK reg and then finalise details when your there, I've done in the past and it's not been an issue.
The dealer will take the export section of the V5 form and you take the rest for registering down here. If the car has no motor tax there's a risk of being stopped by police before you cross the border, could be worth getting it taxed for minimum period.

Probably 2% at max so €40 on €2000. There's so many providers and some will make their money by giving a low rate and no commission, others will make their money on commission and a good rate.
