So the missus has given me the go ahead to build a putting green and nets in the back garden. Any ideas how I'd go about getting started? Would it be possible to do myself or am I better off buying artificial grass?

It'll be expensive to maintain let alone install an actual green , daily cutting , specialised mover , spray chemicals , top dressing etc. I'd say artificial will be expensive too and that needs maintainable too.

Personally I'd go for an indoor putting mat and use the money saved to buy a launch monitor to use for feedback when beating balls into the net.

    Great job for $80.
Not sure where you could source a similar mat over here, probably Amazon or eBay.

Not that it was cheap, but I noticed that carpet right was stocking fake grass when I went past the other day.

Lots of ground work has to be done before putting green. Make sure the grass you buy its not Chinese crap
