In-flight announcements--RYR v EI

I find it all but impossible to hear/understand the announcements made by cabin crew on RYR flights....I think this is a combination of a crap/very cheap PA system on RYR 737's and the apparent inability of RYR staff to S P E A K S L O W L Y into the microphone!

By contrast I flew to Budapest on Friday with EI. The cabin crew were all eh...well experienced and I heard every word as clear as a bell. The PA system on the Airbus was noticably clearer. It had more depth of (midrange) tone and didn't sound at all tinny. My return flight from BUD is next week with RYR....so I'll compare and contrast.

Anybody concur/disagree? Or is it just me?

So use to it at this stage from either i dont take any notice. no going to much off topic however, i think Ryanair have improved a great deal in the past year or so and new interiors are a nice job!

I can't avoid the damn EI announcements. The speakers are invariably set to piercing volume level that blast me from the serenity of my dreams with the subtlety of a sledgehammer.

I'll don't think I'll ever forgive getting an extended spiel about in-flight products (but no duty free because we're in Europe) at 1:45am on a flight from CDG-DUB that was delayed several hours...

To be honest I'd be surprised if there is any kind of option when it comes to the PA system installed on an aircraft. Consider that it is an important part of the aircraft's safety system and as such I don't think it's something the owner would be allowed to skimp on when purchasing.
While there may be differences in the systems used on the 737 vs the A320, I imagine most of what you perceive as quality deficiencies are caused by the person speaking into the handset.

It's just you to be honest.

The 737NG has a discrete PA system ( by Rockwell-Collins ) whereas the A320 has it integrated into the general IFE system, with an emergency back-up power supply.

Boeings as of and after the 787 have moved to the integrated approach.

Personally I find the PA volume seems to vary from individual airframe to airframe and crew to crew.
From my childhood job of helping out in a local radio station it has always stayed with me that you focus on speaking clearly into the mike rather than trying to be loud.

I hate it when the pilot gives a progress update and mutters into the mike or speaks very low. Also the announcment in Irish by EI is a load of crap and should be scrapped.

There's definitely some variance in there right enough, but as a general rule EI is very loud.

I disagree with you on that. That's one of the few things I really like; it's a taste of Ireland for the foreign passengers.

Fun fact; a few years ago I was on an EI flight where the lead crew member was Spanish. She did a passable greeting in Irish that I presume she learned phonetically :)

Best in-flight (pre-flight!) announcement I ever heard was last year on a Cityjet flight to LCY.
Our flight kept getting delayed and pushed back down the list, to the point where the next Cityjet flight (scheduled to depart 2 hours after ours) actually got away 10 minutes ahead of us!
Anyhow, we finally got aboard and the crew were doing their thing buttoning up the doors and lockers and all that stuff, when a distinguished looking grey haired gentleman emerged from the cockpit, took the PA mike, and came a few rows further into the cabin.
He told us his name and that he was the pilot of the aircraft, apologised for the delay, and went on to explain the chain of events that led to the delay.
He concluded by apologising again for the delay, but said that there was a good following wind and he'd be giving the engines a good workout, so he expected to make back at least some of the lost time.
He got a round of applause! :D

Simple bit of customer service there. He couldnt undo the problem but by treating the paying customers like adults he included them in the information loop. Well done that man. Its easy to do but surprisingly hard to get people to actually do.

the best inflight PA system is the one that says f*ck all for the duration of the flight!

Ah yes just like how most Irish people learned it, phonetically and then bet into you by a Christian Brother, a Nun or some equally mad fanatical Gaelgeoir!

Recent Ryanair back from Gatwick to Dublin

"Its windy and raining in Dublin... no surprise there"

If they had said 25C and not a cloud in the sky, I wouldn't be suprised, I'd be completely shocked :D

Still the best one I've had was EI in Amsterdam after a fairly bumpy landing. "Please remain in your seats with your seatbelts fastened while the captain taxis what's left of our airplane to the gate."

Ryanair again "Lovely views of the city on the right now as we come into land".

He repeated that three times. Autoland must have been on.

EI are fairly heavy on the mic during boarding as a rule to get people to stow their stuff and sit down and meet an on-time departure, slightly curt .... you don't hear much from them after that... a little of the opposite from FR.. minus points for them also as a lot of the staff are Eastern European and speak very very fast in that kinda robotic sounding accent to the point of not getting barley a word of what they have to say... really need to cut out some of the PA's but improved a bit... that trumpet upon landing needs to be ninjad... also not short of using it when arriving late... not that it matters still stupid and encourages the clapping seal empty heads...
