How can one tell from looking if a car wheel does not have enough clearance? Are such wheels a danger?

    Clearance between wheels and what?

If at full lock you hear rubbing - not enough clearance
If at bumps you hear rubbing - not enough clearance

It'd be hard to gauge properly but I suppose you could stick a hand between the wheel and the arch and see how much space there is?

Look for witness marks anywhere you think it might be getting tight.

Why dont you give us the full story rather than a vague question, eg were you stopped in an excessively lowered car by the Gardai who said the wheels didn't have enough clearance and want to know if it's possible for him/her to say that without physically checking?

In my opinion, if you have to ask the question, it's too tight ...

A lot of assumptions been made here, the OP already labeled a boy racer.Having said that OP if you give make and model of the car and the issue you're having you should get plenty help here

nobody's labelled the OP as anything to be fair

    absolutely 100 % wrong.

Are you going to give any more information. It's hard to know what you're asking. Are the wheels on the car, are you looking at getting a particular size wheel for a particular car, is it just a hypothetical situation?

curious. heard of people saying they could be dangerous and illegal. saw some. wondered if or how one could tell by looking

On some cars you can tell at a glance especially if spacers / camber plates or incorrect ET alloys are used.

This ///M3 will definitely rub going over bumps or with salad dodgers in the back

The evasiveness just makes it sound like this:

...but would have been a sensible or logical reason for asking rather than 'just wondered'

Playing the devil's advocate here, there's nothing definite there. The car could be on air suspension (although I suspect it's not) or aligned correctly to allow for an aggressive wheel fitment. I've seen much lower and tighter fitment on cars which don't rub under any circumstance, it just depends if the car is setup correctly i.e. stiffer springs, dampers, arches rolled, geometry, tyre width etc.

People are trying to help you here, giving them some basic information may help them answer your question.

Because you asked a vague question in a public forum which could potentially have several correct answers.

I chose what I thought might have been a possible scenario for asking and then you got all snarky and defensive about it.

Without a scenario or example then it's a stupid question which has no correct answer.

At an educated guess, I'd say they're trying to ascertain whether we're looking at a late-model BMW M5 with nice, elegant, flared love-handles and low-profile runflats, or a Trevor'd-up Corolla hatchback with Carlos Fandango wheels and 2mm of suspension travel like an F1 car gone wrong. One of those is like a red rag to a bull as far as the Sweeney are concerned. Can you guess which?? :pac:

Not only that but the wheel is also protruding from under the body. The wheel is too wide for the car in this picture.

Yes, I'm pretty sure that's illegal. It would be in the UK.

:pac::pac::pac::pac::pac::pac: This place cracks me up

Anyway, if the wheel catches then there isn't enough clearance. Simple. At every stage until the wheel starts to catch, there is enough clearance.
