Retro fit Underfloor heating upstairs only

    Hi all

    I have a quick query regarding Underfloor heating and looking for advice.

    I purchased a house and it has Oil central heating. The 15year old boiler recently gave up the ghost. Currently I am in the process of speccing a new oil boiler and plumber mentioned to look into installing an Air to Water heat pump (Panasonic) as the primary heating along with the oil boiler as a back up.

    There is a concrete first floor and there was an idea of taking the opportunity of installing underfloor heating throughout upstairs at this stage seeing as we are about to begin renovations (skirt, lamianate floors, doors, architraves being replaced)

    Fortunately/unfortunately the downstairs had been renovated already so the option for installing underfloor heating is not really viable. But some rooms can be accessed and underfloor could be installed in those

    Regarding Zoning, if you can imagine the house is split down the middle. Half of downstairs and half of upstairs is zone 1, with the other halves being zone 2. Again this is something we can't seem to alter due to the plumbing.

    The questions I am trying to answer is;

    Is it possible to retro fit the Air to Water heat pump to only the upstairs or is there any value to doing it?

    The house is currently a BER B3 with bead filled cavity, Insulated plasterboard throughout

    Thanks for reading!

    IMO the heat pump idea in this case is not the right approach as it adds a level of expense and complexity that is unwarranted and not cost effective.
    Retro UFH upstairs is the same, apart from the fact that doors etc would need to be raised and you may then fail the habitable room height requirement.

    Re the zoning, on the one hand you are considering the plumbing for UFH and saying you can alter the zoning plumbing:D

    Have you considered electric underfloor heating?

    I used Calorique Electric Underfloor Heating film for an apartment. Paired with Heatmiser Neostat-e thermostats, it works perfectly for me.

    You would have to use engineered wood flooring though.

    You can use air to water with your existing radiators.i have seen this done in a good few houses and it works perfectly
