Anybody know the procedure involved in getting one of these from scratch? And roughly how much does it cost?

Iv been googling but haven't really gotten anything clear on it.

To get a C category licence, you need to hold B category licence already.
THen you need to pass HGV theory test (about €40 afair). Apply for driving permit (€35).
Apply for driving test (€120) and pass it.
And then apply for new licence which will have C category added to it (€35).

That's absolutely minimum required. Prices are out of my head, so might differ a bit.

However there's bit more about it.

    1. If you really want to pass a test, and never driven a truck, you'll need to take some lessons with an instructor. Lesson is usually about €60-70 per hour if i'm right. How many lessons you'll need depends on you. You might need none, you might need 40 hours. There's no legal minimum.

    2. You'll need to provide a truck for a driving test, so if you don't have a truck, you'll need to rent one (best place to rent it for a test is from your driving instructor). (will probably cost about €150 or more.

    3. If you intend to drive trucks for reward (work as a truck driver), you'll need a driver's CPC as well. To do this, you'll need to do two big theory tests (€70 each) before your driving test, and then additional practical CPC test, which you can do together with your driving test (I think it costs another €50 or something).

    4. Most companies look for 2 years experience before offering a job barely above minimum wage, with terrible hours.

    5. And I forgot to mention that all above applied to Rigid trucks (without trailers).
If you want licence for trucks with trailers (rigid+trailer or articulated truck), then after all above steps, you'll need to do another driving test (category C+E), which is associated with speding another €35 for driving permit, €120 for a driving test, another €150-€200 for renting artic truck for a test, and another €35 for updating categories on your licence one you pass the test.
And of course few lessons with instructor probably needed as well, as I can't imagine many people passing artic truck without having some practice beforehand.
