Berlingo over revving

I've a 2007 Citroen berlingo van that's goes up in the revs when I clutch to change up the gears. It seems to be more noticeable when the van is well warmed up and changing gears when at 2500 rpm plus. The van seems slow to drop down the revs too when clutched between gear changes. It's really driving me mad! So does anyone have any ideas? Cable issue? Sensor? Any advice would be greatly appreciated

    What engine?

1.6 straight, it's used on farm roadways a lot and there doesn't seem to be much in the way of protection from dirt under the engine.
