A question that was at the back of my head, I have my mother's engagement ring and I am wondering if it is worth holding on to in terms of passing it on to my son to maybe give it to some lucky woman in the future :D . my wife is German so culturally it was never their thing so she doent have an opinion on it. Would it be viewed positively, negatively or any other way? it has a vintage look but is quite neat

not unlike the ring on the left if you were looking at it side on

I think that's a really nice idea. My engagement ring was passed down from my husband's great grandmother. It's far too delicate to wear everyday, so I got a 'day-to-day' ring, but I love the original ring and it means a lot to me and his whole family that I have it.

The only downside is if the woman your son proposes to doesn't really like it, or wants to choose her own ring. But even then, they could do what we've done and get another ring, but the symbolism of the ring passing on would remain.

Dunno, I would want something like that to stay in the family. I'd be more inclined to give it to a child who would wear it themselves. If you are giving it to a child to give to a partner you want to be sure they will return it if the relationship breaks down.

I think it's lovely to wear a family heirloom... After my (now husband) asked my fathers permission, my mother offered him my grandmothers ring knowing that there wouldn't be the money to buy anything decent which he gladly accepted. It means a huge amount to me to be able to wear it and I wear it everyday.

Lovely idea. Cross generational links like that are quite special, and the ring is absolutely beautiful.

I would have been very moved if my husband had proposed with a family ring.

My partner proposed with a family ring and I adore it. We never would have been able to afford one like this ourselves, and the background to it made it more special. He got it cleaned and re-sized for me before proposing :)

My husband proposed with his grandmothers ring. It is beautiful and I love it. I hope to pass it on to our child when the time comes.
I don't wear it every day as it is a little too big (even thought it was resized down 4 sizes) and I am so afraid that something will happen it. But I wear it on special occasions and now that I am pregnant and my wedding ring doesn't fit I wear it all the time.

I think its a lovely idea, if you don't have a daughter to pass it to directly.

Sometimes antique rings can be a bit delicate for day to day wear, for example my mother doesnt wear her own engagement ring (just he wedding ring) as hers is an antique and it just wouldnt last. As others have said, maybe they might choose another day to day ring also if this is the case, but I think it would be only a good thing, I don't see a downside.
