No Tax on new (to me) car

Bought a second hand car which has no tax on it at the moment. I need to use the car as i have no other way of getting around, and cant tax it until the log book gets back to me. (I carry proof of the recent purchase in the form of a signed and dated reciept from the previous owner)

Anyone ever been stopped in a situation like mine. Are the guards understanding? Also whats the story with parking on a public road. Im aware i can be ticketed for parking with no tax. Am i best avoid parking publicly or should i leave a note in the tax holder hoping the guard or parking warden is understanding

Don't park it on a public street, nobody is going to fall for any notice you put on the windscreen and good luck if you're stopped by the cops, a handwritten 'receipt' from a private sale isn't worth the paper it's written on though if you can produce your licence and insurance cert. on the spot, they will probably let you off so have them with you at all times just in case.

you can tax it on line as soon as the transfer is done, you don't need to wait to get the taxbook
