When to trim a newly planted hedge

    Hi All,

We've just planted 6ft bay laurel in order to create a boundary hedge to the front of our house.

At the moment they are tall and slim and almost the right height, but we'd like them to be denser. My instinct is to allow the plants recover and establish roots before pruning, is this correct?

    Many thanks

    JB

A little trim at planting time might have been better. Are the plants supported at the moment? it may be better to wait until summer before a little prune. Any chance of a picture? Dont forget to water well while they are establishing, esp if the summer is dry.

When setting up the face of a hedge, top or sides, once the plants are established (having bought smaller plants than the hedge intended) you would have pruned to 6 to 10 inches before where you want the final face/shape to be, that will allow the plant to bush out from the pruning point. Next time you prune allow for an inch or two after that point, to build up the bushing out face over time. It can take a few years to get the faces established.
