Selling a car worth 20k+

Is it common to sell higher value cars privately or are they always traded in with a car dealer? I imagine the risks for both the buyer and seller go up. I have a 131 320D that I don't want to trade in for anything else. I don't see a huge amount of private sales on carzone but don't want to be ripped off by a dealer either!

Personally i wouldn't drop 20k on a car with no come back. Cant see many that would take the risk

It's going to be very difficult to find someone prepared to part with that kind of cash in a private sale unless you price it close to €2k below a straight sale from a dealer.

There is a guy with a recent thread about selling an a6 for the region of 25k as he is emigrating. I personally wouldn't buy it, or your car. Unless you gave me a great price, no warranty and no comeback is a big turn off if dropping 20k+.

If your car was worth 20k from a main dealer, 18k from an independent garage I would want it for 15-16k in a private sale. (just example prices).

Even then, if I needed to finance I would struggle to raise the funds from a financial institution for a private sale.

Your market is small, it will sell, but at what price?

A friend is having the same problem with a 15,500euro price tag...
It's 17-18k in garages. Not one reply since putting up on carzone/cbg 3 weeks ago.

Great pictures, great car... I just can see why it's not getting any enquires

    (maybe its the 3Litre V6 1200euro a year tax) :/

What if there is still a year of warranty from the manufacturer?

In 2003 i bought a merc from a private buyer, it was 18 months old. I paid 5 k less than I could get it in any dealership. I laid out 20k at the time., 5k is 5k after all.

The manufacturer's warranty while transferable to the next owner, will not cover everything. Any remaining manufacturer's warranty will cover premature failure of parts or mechanical defects. It won't cover mechanical issues as a result of the previous owner's neglect, poor maintenance or repair.

Sure, but maintenance history should be easy enough to verify if seller claims the warranty is still there...

From what I've seen on boards private sales are usually for cars up a few grand.
I'm sure people do buy high price cars privately, but I wouldn't say it's common.

One under 20k an done over 20k.
No issues with the cars or buyers.

Either will a dealer warranty though

Depending on the term of the warranty from the dealer. I've had a car fixed by a dealer under their warranty because of something the previous owner had poorly repaired. I would not have expected the manufacturer to fix it however.

Personally I think it would be a struggle to sell a car privately in Ireland at 20k.

As said, it's a risk many aren't willing to take. Plus if you do reduce it to say 4k or 5k less than it can be bought for from a dealer, buyers might get suspicious as to why it's so cheap, thinking 'there must be something wrong with it'.

I had a very good car competitively priced a couple of years ago around the 10k mark, and got very few callers, had to end up trading it in.
