Just wondering, is motor tax checked on the NCT or will they even test it without it, been asked by someone as they will be over by a day when its being tested, and want to put the car for sale assuming it passes immediately.

So, what if they dont renew tax and then sell it, are they still liable for any period which they didnt tax it?

Ive looked at this before for myself, but just want some clarification as its somewhat particular,
ie they will NCT the day after the tax expires in a local NCT centre, technically, I know they shouldnt be on the road and technically they should be taxing immediately, but their intention is to sell immediately.
Will they liable for any untaxed portion of time, if it isnt SORN'd prior to the end of the month, ie the end of this month.
edit, ie its taxed till the end of April, sale is for reason of, they cant afford to run it, taxing for 3 months isnt an option for that reason, plus its less likely to recoup that from the new owner in the sale.

the outstanding tax bill goes away with a change of ownership

Thats what I thought, just wanted to be certain before I said that to them and mostly that they could NCT without tax in place.
Didnt want them getting turned away and then blaming me.

the minimum SORN period is 3 months too so it's the only option really if they may want to sell the car soon, I'm not sure if the next person would have to wait 3 months.

I have ruled out suggesting SORN to them which could be interpreted worse by an Garda if stopped on the way to/from NCT or if taking a test drive in the following week or so, rather than just being a few days or a week out of motor tax as a SORN would be a false decleration, which I think seems worse and the penalties might be steeper.
There could be a prospective buyer in the week following the NCT and any amount of tax due by the new owner in May would be due, so the full amount would overall be paid, any portion of that due to be paid (1 week - 10 days) and unavailable to be used by the new owner could be knocked off the price for less than taxing for 3 months and trying to recoup that in the price.

edit, as for the 3 months minimum for SORN, you can re tax within that period at anytime for sure, Ive done that myself to put my car back on the road when Id SORN'd it off the road, my car was off the road for a month but as you say the minium you can SORN for is 3 months, but if you re-tax within the same month its due to start a SORN or in any month no matter how late in the month, I'm fairly sure you are effectively paying for that entire month.

you can tax the car 5 minutes after declaring it off the road if you choose to. You don't have to wait 3 months.

Tax would be payable by the new owner from first of month of purchase
