Fast lane?

    I think I had a dream/fantasy about this - any thoughts?

Build a third lane onto the motorway, using coloured asphalt perhaps. Minimum speed 140km/h and no upper limit. Charge an express toll tag for the journey or an additional tax disc. ANPR would detect fraudulent use.

A bit like the outside lane of an autobahn where there is an 'understanding' that you don't use it at an average speed, except formalised and enforced.

    What could possibly go wrong?

    In first with...
"Overtaking Lane not Fast Lane" :pac:
    And..
Lack of training / understanding on how to drive on the motorway.

    Have you costed this?

It would be just another lane for muppets to hog.

Driver training with strict enforcement of existing rules would be enough to make motorway driving a much safer and more pleasant experience but neither will happen because it's just not a priority.

great idea.... until you realise people cannot drive in general on the motorway and what you will end up with it a car doing 180k looking to take the next exit and so they will zip back across 3 lanes with 200m to spare

If everyone stuck by the rules there wouldn't be any issue on the motorways.

Exactly, but adding an extra lane wont solve anything

People have enough trouble with motorway driving as it is, a different colour lane might make their heads explode.

as proved by the Naas Rd widening

That's completely different to what the OP is suggesting

I think we should do like Soviet Russia and have a special lane for important people.

So you get some granny toddling along in her Micra at 141 km/h.

    How do you overtake her?

If you nudge the rear left corner of her car, she'll lose control, heading left in all likleihood and then you can pass her.
    Simples! :D
