Pay Issue

    Hi guys

Quick one to pick your brains.

Work in sales- excellent basic and I've always done very well for myself commision wise. Found my job easy, no challenge and I was earning really good dough almost on auto-pilot.

Anyways, 2 months ago my gaffer came to me, told me she was having issues in retention and asked me would I give it a bash (previous guy had moved to a different department but didn't do a good job at all handling our customers leaving, the whole Retention strategy was all over the place.

I agreed to switch positions and take it under my wing as my own little project (I was flattered to be chosen, ego boost and all that so didn't talk about money, but she assured me I would be 'looked after' while I was getting it up and running again.)

So fast forward 2 months and results have improved dramatically, there's a noticeable increase in saving customers yet I got my paycheck there and while i knew my basic would be the same i got LESS commision this month, even less than some guys I was working with in the other department.

I accept commision is always paid on the previous month ie March when I would have been just settling in to the new role and I may very well get more next month but still..........

This is a much tougher role and this month I got less commision

Should I say something or wait til next months pay?

    Cheers

Clearly this needs to be managed. You shouldn't be disadvantaged while aiding the company.

While in the current role you need to be compensated for not being able to spend as much time on earning commission.

If you've been half as good as you think you have been they should be smart enough to see this.

If not, say you'll be looking to go back to your previous commission oriented job.

    Good luck.

Approach supervisor now. Say you were assured your new role would be recognised which to you meant you would hold your current bonus - that is you would go no lower during the teething phase. what have you to lose by asking? No arguments - ask politely.

I would talk to your boss about it asap. there is nothing to be gained by not discussing it with her.

Email is not the right way to communicate an important topic like this.

This is a topic for a 1:1 conversation, you need to see the visual feedback also.

If remote and 1:1 not practical, use phone/video.

    Hey guys

    Just an update on this.

So I sent her an email 2 weeks ago, laid my cards on the table.

The next day she mailed me back and asked me to outline how many days I worked in each department in March before I switched departments -I'm guessing to see how much I worked in each department and consequently review my bonus for that month.

A week to 10 days passed and I felt she was ignoring me, zero contact, no emails, then yesterday she was walking by desk, asked me to run a report for her and she said 'told me not to worry, that her boss was now looking into my commision.

Now I dont know what to do. Do I wait again for another 10 days to pass, or do I just keep my powder dry and wait til payday at the end of the month to see what I get?

Even if I am accommodated this month, how do I know its not going to happen again?

I get the feeling I should have asked for a salary increase to clear up any bonus discrepancies

Did you come off phones to manage a retention team? I actually earned more than my boss most months due to sales .

There's no actual retention team- I'm the one person looking after the entire thing so no more sales whatsoever

When I done my suffering in the call center I had a contract with the company not the campaign so if I got moved from inbound to say customer care or outbound my commission structure would change. Can you average out your monthly commission and ask for a flat rate of that wage per month. Definitely sell yourself for the wage increase. I can't imagine you like looking after retentions if your not rewarded .
