Recently I was reading the instructions to a joule unvented stainless steel cylinder. It said in the small print that it must not be installed where the water is artificially softened. I rang joule and they couldn't give me a reason why. Does anyone here know why?

Totally guessing here but could the salt in the softened water attack the stainless steel?

    Increased chances of electrolysis.

Pin hole leaks, but it can be like a perfect storm, two cylinders piped in a identical uniform manor in two identical houses side by side with the same well water, one installation kept leaking (3 cylinders) the other never had a problem.

If your in a Hard Water area is recommended to use a Copper Cyl with a sacrificial anode. But your probably going to need a Softener anyway if you have hard Water. So a softener will definitely help the SS Cyl.
