Would I qualify for disability allowance?

I am 18 years old going on 19 I'm wondering if I would qualify for disability. I get the full amount of job seekers at the moment (€188) I get the full amount due to being in HSE residential care before.

I've been putting off going to my GP about the disability as I feel it'll be a long journey to no where.

I have had mental issues in the past depression, paranoia. I had things on file I went to councilors etc for them things.

I also had arthritis in the past constantly had fluid in my two knees. They said it cleared a few years back I'm not sure if the fluid is back or not but my knees get extremely sore sometime's I would be crippled with the pain when walking.

And another thing is that I have a issue with my right eye which has been a issue since I was maybe 5 years old can't exactly remember. I'm a good majority blind in that eye I can see out it but it's EXTREMELY blurry and if I'm to read something out of that eye it has to be up to my face in decently big writing. (I'm not sure exactly what my eye condition is called)

    My questions are the following.

    1. Would I qualify for disability?

    2. Will I have to go to constant meetings to review my disabilitys?

    3. Will my payment be less than it is now?

    4. Would I be without a payment in the mean time of the switch?

The 2nd question I'm very curious about as my mam is deaf and she is on disability and doesn't have to constantly appeal her disability but people told me I would for mine?

And sorry if this is in the wrong place I'm new to Boards.

You need to be means tested by Social Welfare. You need to go to your GP to state in a letter as backup proof to SW. I say you be entitled to it based on medical grounds but not sure if you still get the jobseekers allowance as well. SW can clarify with you with that. You can get rent allowance alright along with them.

I cannot answer if you will be or not you need to get means tested and assessed to qualify.
Only one meeting I think. If you are a holder of a medical card you need to clarify that you live at such an address they send out letter to make sure you still a resident there, sign and send it off.

No payment is the same as jobseekers and the dole from what I am aware of if over 26 I think its less if younger.

You might be if switching from jobseekers to Disability allowance but if getting both you might get less for the disability allowance but as far as I know those over 26 get the €188 where as those under a certain age get less or half. Check out the social welfare website or get someone to look at it with you. Citizen office and social welfare office can inform you on all of that.

You probably come under a different level/category of disability as circumstances can be permanent or change. That's just my own take on it! Hope my advice is ok!? All the best

You won't get both, disability allowance is for people who's disability stops them working so they can't also be a jobseeker.

Op nobody can answer the questions you asked .
To get disability you need to have a on going medical condition that's going to last longer than 12 months and prevent you from working,
You need a lot of evidence from doctors and specialists to back up your claims that a condition is preventing you from working it's not a simple case of you saying I cant work fill a from in and that's it ,
And people on disability are regularly assessed to see if their fit to work ,
It can also take 12+ months to get accepted,
Your first call should be to your GP first and discuss it with them first.
Maybe you should ask for a referral about your eye too

I didn't mean to come across saying I'll get both of them.

So basically I'm probably better off trying to find work while I'm struggling day to day on standard basis.

It's hard to go day to day on normal basis as it is with my knees and eyes so a work basis would be very difficult.

I would prefer to be on disability as I won't be struggling as much with the problems I have and the hassle of the job seekers allowance at me about working..

Any advice on what should I do?

Because I do feel that if I go enquire about it I'll be just seen as a "Lazy teenager" who doesn't wanna work. But that's not the case at all, I have tried to look for work and I'm struggling in finding work.

But I'm also thinking about the disability as people told me I would be much better to go on it if a day to day basis is difficult for me.

Talk to your gp first and foremost and discuss with him or her ,
It can be a long drawn out process speaking from experience.

No problem I will do unfortunately medical card is outdated at the moment so have to wait to renew that.

It sounds more painful to go through the stress and hassle of it then it is to deal with the issues I have. And of course I don't wanna go and tell job seekers about it because they'll just cut me off.

Your gp has to fill out forms stating all the reasons you aren't able to work...why is your medical card out of date? They usually notify you months beforehand to make sure there isn't a gap.

It's pretty easy to fill in the form but it is a hard benefit to get and generally takes a long time. Saying that my daughter was approved in a very short time, we were able to provide multiple consultant reports which probably helped.
The more medical evidence you have the better.

It's outdated because I didn't get around to it at the time then forgot about it so have to get onto that ASAP.

And how long is a short time and a long time to get accepted? I also don't have any actual papers for my past medical history but would they not contact them such people?

And also all my medical records are from past 1+ years ago but they're only starting to really effect me now.

So will I have to go for appointments for them all again to be checked for them all?

It can take 12 months + to be accepted, it's quote common to be refused and have to appeal. It's up to you to provide evidence of why you need disability allowance and can't work, they aren't going to contact doctors for you.

Your own gp needs to fill in a form describing the severity of your medical issues and needs to confirm you are unable to work for at least a year.
