So due to leaving the country and finally deciding not to bother re-regging car in uk, I'm going to sell. Realistically for a ca25k value car is selling to a dealer the only option? I'm going to be out of country do father/brother dealing with and I want the least hassle for them. (2012 a6 sline)

Any other options I don't know about?

I would say you would be lucky to get 60% of the retail price for it at a dealers, if this is ok go for it, if not sell it private.

Ouch.....they are selling them for 28-30...I would have thought 22k or so would be on cards on that basis..they are going to "appraise" Friday. Can you really do a 25k odd private sale?

It's not easy, your buyer basically needs to have it in savings already, no bank is going to do finance on a private sale. As the dealer is not taking your car as trade in against another all their profit and loss is tied up in your car, if they sell it with no issues great it's all profit but if there is problems they are at a loss and they also most likely have to sell a car that will be traded in against yours.

What kind of mileage is on yours?

For that price it will be hard to find a private buyer. A lot of people won't be willing to pay 20K+ on a "sold as seen" agreement. They will want some sort of reassurance (warranty) which a private sale doesn't provide.

I'd say bring car to UK, this is least hassle.

47k miles on it at the moment and in almost perfect nick. I have used it in uk for last few months but between all the hoops and costs to re reg and not being able to sell it here, I've given up on the idea.

Dealer is same dealer I bought it from and had it serviced with. Official Audi dealer

Speedo clock change is the biggest cost and it's a paperwork nightmare.

4K Euro rebate, registration and paperwork about 100£ to dvla and vosa. Operation on car to convert to miles (or miles and km) about 4/500 to do it properly £. Main hassles are time to do this and the nct and all other paperwork and the mot. And at end of the day if I want to sell realistically I would have to bring back to Ireland and reverse the hoops, as an import won't sell here. And I can buy the exact same car here for about 13k...

So taking all that in I decided to sell in ireland

Not many private buyers around with that sort of money.

Not a lot, but definitely they do exist. All those 3-year old UK imports are not done over financing, but hard earned cash.

It's definitely possible but very very tough. Anything over 10k is awkward in a private sale.

I'd agree with the above.. when dealing with private sales my thought would be "only spend what you could afford to write off in the event it all went wrong"

Not many can afford to just write off 20k on a no-comeback deal. That's not saying your car has a load of hidden issues, but not many would take that chance unless they knew you/the car I'd think.

I've sold my last 2 Audis back to an Audi main dealer & gotten pretty near what I would have got back in a private sale & a bit above trade-in values offered (both cars valued over €30k)

They retailed one car at €4k more than they paid me for it & the other €5k more.

I agree, unless I knew the car and person damn sure wouldn't hand over 20k with no comeback. But I guess some people do

I def wouldn't give €20k to some lad in the UKs brother!

Would a bank give out a personal loan of that amount for people importing from the UK?

What I mean is I suppose, if I get a 'car loan' from the bank or credit union, is that paid directly to the dealer or do I get the cash first?

Last time I tried they would only issue a cheque for a dealer and wouldn't provide one to any dealer outside Ireland.

I recently got a car loan approved by applying online for 16k. They were throwing it at me

Agree with this, it's as much a perception issue as anything.

Sadly, you might be better off taking the loss of a couple of grand.

Sold and happy with the amount. Audi did it all same day (well except for bank transfer). Good result!!

Were part of the terms to also sign an NDA :D

No, and even though a standard enough car they are in high demand atm. The retail price is actually up these days. A year ago there was 20 of these at least in that branch all the same, now there's 3!

Can I ask which dealer did you sell it too?

    North dublin

I was in a similar position recently. Not emigrating, but did a straight deal on next car & sold current car to a guy in the trade who knows it well and has worked on it. Saved at least €1k on conventional trade-in, probably more. Dealers really chase you up if doing a straight deal and it's easier to get quotes over the phone.

Selling privately would be ideal but meeting strangers in LIDL carparks and allowing them test drive your car - as a colleague of mine tried - is a bit messy, not to mention time-consuming...
