Islands suitable for Wild camping?

Trying to get some trip ideas for some "dad and son" outings over the summer. I was interested in going to Blasket for 2 nights but someone told me that even if the weather is good the boats might not go over because of the currents so a bit nervous of arriving down and be told go or no come back

So anyone have good experience from Islands on the West or South coast, ideally where you can camp beside a beach and aren't hassled by anybody? Inishmore is probably a strong alternative as there is some stuff to do.

if you're depending on ferries then that limits your options - Inisbofin and Inis Meain would be my picks in that case.
On the other paw, if you were to get into sea kayaking, then there are literally hundreds of island to choose from, most of them uninhabited and many not too far offshore - South Connemara and Clew Bay would be good areas to start off with. There are a few people who run multi-day trips in these areas so maybe start with a few 'guided' trips to see how you like it.

the sea Kayaking is something I'd be interested in. I took junior down the Barrow last year from Athy down to Graignamanagh camping along the way so the idea of island hopping for a few days would be great. I'll give that a look into Thanks!

Any details on that trip? Sounds excellent. Logistics, boat, kit, stopovers sort of thing?

if you google there is a an operator that runs it, he will give you a canoe with the gear , barrels and stuff and will sort something out with the car drive it down half way and go back with him to the start. if you are adults you might make it down to Waterford but we ended up in Greg on Friday.
pick a spot every evening to camp, its very quiet but there is normally one town or village to stop at every day to buy supplies. Normally you skip the locks and go over the wiers and you get the hang of them quickly enough, if you go the locks you will normally have to lift the boat out and again would be easier with a couple of adults.

I'd recommend it really enjoyed it

If it was me I'd look at a ferry to innish murry or drive on to coney island but this should give you lots to think about

Inis Murray is a lovely island to camp on, a bit of pain to land on and, as far as I know, no ferries :( .
Not necessarily a difficult crossing but perhaps a bit too open for inexperienced paddlers without a capable guide/leader

+1 for Oileain - a bible at this stage for sea kayakers

Hadnt even heard of Inis Murray before, it would be beyond my canoeing skills , If I could hire a day boat it would be perfect, get a bit of a sail in as well. Renting small sailing boats seems to be rare enough, I spotted one for hire in Baltimore so could do some of the islands around there

decided in the end to rent a boat so we will be sailing around the Islands off Baltimore , just hope we are lucky with the weather. Plan is camp on one of the islands each night.

Cool which Islands do you have in mind? Some don't have much of a pier around that area

the boat I have can be landed on a beach , so all of them hopefully over the week. I havnt quite figured out the logistics yet, have everything in the boat or come back to the car each evening grab the tents and back to one of the islands. Cape clear, Sherkin and Heir for sure and possibly just hit the other ones during the day.

the boat is along the lines of this

Nice, went to those islands a few weeks ago but only camped on Cape Clear (used the paid camp site) and I'll be going back there in a couple of weeks. Horse everything into the boat will be the easiest I'd say

i'd say you are right, is there enough material on any of the islands to make a small cooking fire? we will probably do a bit of fishing

There might be some that washes up on the beach but there would be people coming along with the same idea as you I'd say. Bring an ould drum of calor just in case I'd say
