Cancelling a car order

    Hi
Looking for advice on where I stand if I cancel an order for a new car.
I ordered a new car for July delivery about 3 weeks ago but now am not so sure I want to buy it as I think I will keep my current car a while more.
The car hasn't been built yet and according to the dealer won't be until June. It's a 5 bmw with a few extras.
I signed an order but it doesn't say on it what happens if I cancel. I paid a deposit on the day. I understand if the car is built I would be more liable but at this stage do you think I would get my deposit back and be able to walk away?
    Thanks

Talk to your dealer asap to have any chance of deposit back as he is not obiged t9 return your deposit unless he breaks terms of the contract you entered into by paying a deposit and agreeing to buy a car from them.

A relative got her €1000 deposit back no problem recently, purely down to dealer discretion though. With the new 5 looming buying a 5 series now is not really the wisest move.

Go in in person, don't phone, explain that you aren't buying right now rather than that you want to just cancel their order.

All depends on the contract you signed, the dealer would be able to keep the deposit and potentially seek whatever else is in the contract if they wanted to.

It really depends on the dealer and your relationship (if any!) with them and how you approach it. As said, go in person, explain your change in circumstances, very sorry, blah, blah, hope to re-order the car again sometime soon in the future, etc.

i.e. don't go in all guns blazing demanding money back.

yep. you'll often get someone who got a better deal after the fact and just wants to order somewhere else.

the amount of people who would suddenly lose their job the days between oordering and collecting a (in stock) car is unreal :)

just gotta convince them that's not you

    Thanks for the input.
I got a very good deal on my trade in but just am not sure I want to change at all, nothing to do with money or anything else.
Dealer sent me an email showing car at " status 1100" which is the the order accepted by bmw. I'm a little embarrassed as I pushed him hard for a good deal.
I looked at the order and it doesn't say anything about what the consequences of cancelling are.

Did you spec anything unusual on the car? An unusual colour? Or load it up with factory fitted options?

If it's a standard spec 520d... then the dealer won't be too worried, he'll find another customer for it, assuming he can't cancel the factory order.

On the other hand if its a "canary yellow" petrol loaded up with pricey options, then he might be a bit miffed to say the least and may not be too willing to return your deposit.

Only one way to find out - call into them ASAP.

    Got sorted this evening.
They had no problem and it was painless in the end.
    thanks for replies.
