splitter problems

I live in North County Dublin and my setup at home is that I have a satellite dish and Saorview ariel with coax cables running to the living and dining rooms. I have a combi box in the living room and there is a splitter box on the cable to cater for the Saorview and Freeview signals.

I have similar wiring in the dining room but up to now I only used the Saorview so I didn’t need the splitter. I recently bought a Freeview box in Derry so I put the splitter back on the cable and ran one wire into the TV, which has a Saorview tuner, and the other into the Freeview box. The Freeview box is connected to the TV by a HDMI cable.

When I had everything plugged in, the Freeview box was working perfectly. However, on Saorview, I could only see RTE1. I disconnected the Saorview cable and took off the metal connector and then put the metal connector back onto the cable. This time I got all the Saorview stations except RTE1.

I then took the splitter off and ran the cable into the TV and all the Saorview stations worked perfectly.

Could someone explain to me why I’m having these Saorview issues?

It sounds like you haven't a strong enough signal to survive being split between the two items. Can you not use the Freview box for Saorview as well? Th Irish channels would show up in the 800's

What is the make and model of the "Freeview" box?

When you say Freeview box, are you referring to a box that's connected to the satellite dish or an aerial? Freeview is the name of the UK's terrestrial service, like Saorview here, connected to an aerial.

The equivalent free satellite channels are via a Freesat receiver or a FTA satellite receiver.

The box I bought is a Bush Freesat HD set top box. I got it in Argos in Derry.

I tightened up all the connections and then plugged the cable into the TV all the Irish stations worked ok. When I went to put the connection into the freesat box, the picture on RTE disappeared. When I disconnected the cable from the freesat box, RTE came back on.

What seems to work is when I switch off power to the freesat box at the wall I get all the Saorview stations. There is a power switch on the front on the box but even turning this off doesn't bring back the Irish stations. I have to power it off at the wall.

At least I have a workable situation where if I'm watching a Saorview station I must power off the freesat box at the wall, or if I want to watch a freesat station I just switch the power to the box back on.

The problem might be the splitter, I have come across faulty ones previously. Could also be the cable between the splitter and receiver or the receiver itself.

Can you swap over the splitters and test each at the other TV point to see if the fault travels. Also check the cable from the splitter to the Freesat receiver to ensure the connections at each end are properly made.

The power switch on the front probably puts the box in standby with power still to the LNB via the splitter. Killing the power at the wall removes all power to the LNB via the splitter.
