I have a Mac with 10.6.8 which i have not updated to protect other software thats no longer supported.
Now I need to update to 10.11.2 for a replacement software. Can I upgrade or do I need a new tower ?

    Looks like it's supported - www.apple.com/osx/how-to-upgrade/
If your Mac is running Snow Leopard (v10.6.8) or later, you can upgrade directly to El Capitan.

While it may be possible to upgrade you may want to think about the requirements posted by Apple. These are usually Minimum requirements and if you intend to do any serious work you should consider upgrading RAM to maximum and possibly a newer hard disk or even an SSD if possible and do a clean install rather than an in place upgrade.

I haven't used OSX with a configuration like that - but I have to suspect it will be fine (I guess it must have been a monster spec when new!).

As someone else mentioned - what's the disk setup? An SSD would make things a lot more speedy.

PS To be really picky the 8GB with 8 cores might at the higher end of use mean you end up having the system performance limited by that. But that's being super picky.
