hmm, 7 days would be plenty there, you could fit in Prague (think its about 6hrs by train) aswell or other towns in the Silesian region.

Have been there in December! Amazing city!! Great atmosphere, great local beer called "Piast" and lots of attractions.

Old Town is not as big as the one in Krakow, Warsaw or Gdansk but plenty of nice restaurants and pubs.

If you are into art, there's 2 good museums that are located just 2 minutes walk from each other and 10 minutes walk from the Old Town. They also have awesome fountain with daily laser and music shows! Just let us know what kind of attractions are you interested in?

Wroclaw is a great city with beautifull architecture, amazing main square witch is full of events, clubs and restaurants, and lots of more to see in Lover Silesia.
I reccomend using Airport Wroclaw Transfer, they speak english.

Nice city for a short break but 7 days is too long.

Agree with this. Great for a long weekend, not enough to fill a week. 3 days there and 3/4 in Prague/Krakow would be good.

    Hi,

I'm planning a surprise weekend away in Europe in June for my wife, ideally somewhere new (so not Barcelona, Paris, Amsterdam, Prague, Berlin, anywhere in Belgium, Lisbon). Somewhere to just stroll around, have a drink, bite (we love tapas) and relax.

As it's summer some destinations are crazy prices- e.g. Dublin to Malaga Fri to Sun is €400, Dub to Dubrovnik €400 midweek, Dub to Porto €400. I'll see if we can fly midweek but mightn't be able to. I'm in Galway to flight from Knock or Shannon would be great but not a dealbreaker

    Ideally I'd like
    • inexpensive flights (not €700 total...)
    • short journey, ideally under 2.5 hours, 3 max (San Sebastian lovely but takes 1 hour from Bilbao)

Rome and Venice are places I'd like to visit but are they too busy towards the end of June? I know there's a million websites for help but was hoping someone here might have recommendations & know places that flight prices are still reasonable that time of year please. Maybe somewhere not so obvious but has 'charm'. It's a relaxing break so not too bothered with museums etc. this time.

    Thanks in advance,
    Patrick

somewhere like cologne might be an idea. Flights are cheap as people still havent copped onto the attraction of the place. Flights for the first weekend in June are from €132 euro return. Ryanair and Germanwings fly there with similar enough flight times.
If you want pretty places, then the Moselle and Rhine valleys are a skip away.
If you want food, Cologne has a stupid number of bars, cafes and restaurants. Düsseldorf just up the road is similar, and has a kilometre long strip of nothing but food and drink. Düsseldorf has the biggest Japanese community in Europe, so theres heaps of japanese restaurants (so sushi rather than tapas, maybe a do-able substitution?? )
You can get unlucky with the weather, but mostly it'd be better than Ireland and in June can be over 30 degrees if you get lucky, and should be over 20degrees at the worst of it.

Seville is great for a weekend, on the opposite end of the scale Salzburg is lovely as well if you like the mountains. Plenty to see and do in both.

Just back from Vigo in the north of Spain. My second time there but brought friends this time and everyone loved it. Ryanair started flying there direct this month.

I highly recommend Munich and/or Bavaria. It's perfect whether you're in to cities/museums or want a more outdoors holiday. Munich is a lot nicer looking than Berlin; it's like a German Vienna. The scenery is spectacular, particularly in Upper Bavaria. I'd highly recommend visiting the countryside at least once or twice. Munich by itself is great but if you don't want to travel far I recommend visiting Starnberger See which is a short journey from Munich by S-Bahn.

One great thing about Munich is that it's very relaxed and you don't experience huge volumes of tourists like you would in Rome or Paris. It's relatively good value as well, only slightly more expensive than Berlin.

    Munich attractions:
    Marienplatz (town centre)
    Olympiapark
    Schoss Nymphenburg (palace)
    Residenz (palace)
    English Garden
    BMW Museum
Deutsches Museum (science and technology museum)
    Tierpark Hellabrunn (zoo)
    Viktualienmarkt (large food market)
    Allianz Arena
    Starnberger See (lake)

    Attractions outside Munich:

Schloss Neuschwanstein (probably the most famous castle in the world)
    Schloss Linderhof
    Schools Herrenchiemsee
Zugspitze (Germany's largest mountain, cable car)
    Berchtesgaden (Königssee, Eagle's Nest)
Rothenburg ob der Tauber (picturesque medieval town)
    Nuremberg
    Salzburg (Austria)
    Lindau/Lake Constance

Aer Lingus and Lufthansa fly to Munich from Dublin and Aer Lingus from Cork.

Krakow is a nice spot with plenty to do.

Or Gdansk, if the flight schedules allow it.
    Summers in Poland are fantastic.
Keep a straight face when you get some of the bills after a night's eating and drinking. Unbelievable (in a good way).

Nice. Short flight, airport a short distance from the city, great weather, plenty to visit in the area , easy to use public transport if you don't want to hire a car

+1 for Krakow. You can still fly there from Shannon I think which might help you also. Lovely city, great people and incredibly cheap for food and drink also.

    Hi there
Prague is another option as its very reasonable and it has beautiful buildings and everything is within walking distance. You can fly from Dublin. Nice in France is another option if you are looking for a bit of sun and beach.

    Bath (fly to Bristol),
    Bordeaux,
Hamburg (bigger than the others, but great city nevertheless, easy to navigate by public transport)
    Salzburg

From Shannon you have Munich (albeit an airport 30mins away, but very inexpensive to fly to), Krakow, Warsaw and Wroclaw.

    Cologne is impressive also.

Just back from Warsaw last weekend. Plenty to do. Palace and gardens, mesuem, war museum, Uprising museum and the science centre. You could spend the whole day, 8+ hours there interacting with various things and experiments. Not all for kids. Us three adults had a great time and were the last there after six hours.
Food and drink is very cheap and I reckon weather would be decent in June. Was around 16 degrees last weekend with light showers. I'd definatley recommed it.

Thanks for all the suggestions, I considered them all but went with Biarritz in the end. We love tapas, it's a short enough flight, good flight times, airport is close to the city and it got great recommendations from someone who use to live near there. It's by the beach and not a big, busy city too (even though they weren't on my list of things I was looking for).

I would have considered Bordeaux but I'll be there the weekend before for the Euros, already been to Krakow (I didn't mention that in the beginning). Munich or Cologne sound like great cities; might go there another time.

    Cheers again all,
    Pa.

Biarritz is not tapas country (just saying) :pac:

great place but also rainiest/wettest part of France so don't expect good weather (you might get it, just don't expect it!)

I know but it's so close that they have a fair amount of tapas I was told. The thought of rain at the end of June didn't even enter my head....

Venice is busy all year round, so as far as crowds go, I'm not sure there is a "good" time to go.

I just absolutely love the place though, there are no pictures that do the place justice, you just have to go and see it.

Thanks, it's definitely a city I want to visit but this trip is for my wife's birthday and not sure if Venice is up high on her list.
