Buy a crashed car?

I'm considering buying a repaired crashed car.

its a UK import that was crashed and D2 scrapped by insurance company (i.e. repairable but insurance decided it was economically viable)

Its a 2 year old high spec passat which looks to be in good condition, drove ok etc. and is 20-40% cheaper than i would expect to pay for this car.

I am considering buying this car subject to my own mechanics inspection

Q1. Am i taking a big risk if i buy after it passing inspection ?

Q2. Who might do the most thorough inspection (a main dealer, AA, ??) ?

    any other thoughts ?

    any other thoughts ?

Safety put aside, it would be virtually unsellable until gets into the <€5000 bracket.

Check with your insurer for a quote for this car.

Is car presently in UK or in Ireland?
    Still on UK plates?

    Yeah i agree about reselling.

Regarding safety that would be my main concern. I wonder how far can a garage go to say car is safe or not !

OP, your other thread was about buying a Passat with a possible head gasket issue. Is there a reason you are being drawn to these cars with question marks over them given the amount of Passat out there for sale? Are you just looking at the cheapest examples? Cheap cars are usually cheap for a reason.

If its a 2 year old car, then it must have sustained some amount of damage to be not economically viable for them to fix. Do you really want to drive around ( and ultimately sell on) a car that has had such a wallop?

Normally I have no issue with older cars on a catD, as sometimes a new OE bumper can make them uneconomic. But a 2 year old, high spec passat is a different kettle of fish.

Good point, and I suspect that's what's happening:

Though when I read your comment first, it put me in mind of a much more romantic setup where he's trying to "save" fallen cars or take on hard cases, like someone who always dates abusive assholes or alcoholics and believes they can "save" them.
