What you're looking for is called a petrol car :)

Was thinking of a polo tdi and I would be doing some motorway driving at the weekends

For stop start driving I'd get a Yaris hybrid over a diesel Polo, even with motorway driving thrown in there.

There's a great deal on at the moment for a 5l v8 turbocharged Volvo, seats 50 to 90, wheelchair and pram accessible and comes with it's own paid driver.. :p

Dpf and many other expensive fixes.

Diesel only designed for eating up the miles not stopped in traffic all the time.

right so probably buy the petrol version polo - i like them

Reliability aside a diesel takes a lot longer to warm up than a petrol engine, so doing mostly short trips around town in a diesel won't make the diesel car much more economical than a petrol. Diesels only become more frugal over long journeys so your not going to save anything in fuel by driving one around town.

If your concerned about fuel costs then consider a hybrid, the Yaris is available as a hybrid and is similar in size to the Polo. Hybrids are designed for city driving while offering diesel type fuel savings.

I'd take a fully electrical car over a hybrid any day for town driving tbh. I worked with the Lexus rx300 for a while & that whole stop-start thing got painful for the guests, particularly when you needed the foot down to get out of a sticky situ in traffic on the old airport road. I know you sacrifice towage but if I'm stop-starting all the way home I'd take the electric way

I've a GS450H and never have any issues with stop start in traffic and it'll pull out of any sticky situations without any problems. Maybe you had a dodgy one.

EVs are all good and well except for they have a limited range before they need charging. Good if you live/work close to charge points. Imo a hybrid offers the best of both worlds.

BTW you do know that you can switch start/stop off if you don't like it?

You don't need a diesel. The petrol polo has a 3 cylinder engine which I'm really not a fan of.

Indeed but I was under duress to save fuel for analytics, I must have a lead foot as they say..

Looking at a polo , fiesta , or maybe toyota auris cant really make mind up

    not ready for hybrid yet

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,544 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

The fiesta is the best of those 3, despite being smaller than the Auris (which the polo is too)
    They're also cheap and plentiful.

    A 2010 fiesta is about €10,000 - I dont have much to trade in its a '00

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,544 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

sell the 00 for whatever you can get for it. it's worthless to a garage. prob get 800 privately for it if it's tested and not destroyed . then negotiate a discount off the asking price of the newer car. few hundred.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,544 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

Actually, scale that 800 back a bit!

    Have an 08 Auris myself
Great car, loads of room inside, and I've never had any problems with it (only own it a year though)

I drive mainly around dublin and town and I have to say its costing me sweet f all in petrol money, very economical car.

You could probably pick up a decent one for 5k if you looked around.

You can buy a 2010 Fiesta for a good bit less than 10k:

    style
    edge
    econetic
    titanium
    zetec

also which 2010 polo is better a 1.2 or 1.4 petrol cars

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 464 ✭✭2forjoy

Style is the base Irish spec model, Edge would be the UK equivalent of the Style model here but the Edge is lower spec.

Zetec would be the middle of the range - the sporty spec model of the range.

Econetic is another UK spec model tuned for better fuel economy.

Titanium is the top spec model. Irish Titanium models tend to be lower spec than UK Titanium.

    Basically spec.

Edge and Style are the bottom models, not sure which is lowest but both fairly poorly equipped. Except not much more than Bluetooth, and AirCon.

Zetec is next up. With this you will get a few more luxuries like electric windows, maybe heated windscreen, soft steering wheel.

Titanium is Fords top spec, which will have most of the extras. Likes of Climate control, cruise control, all round electric windows, better spec radio system etc.

As for Econetic, that applies more to the engine, where its tuned differently to get better MPG. It will maybe only be a couple of mpg better than the standard diesel, but its more marketing than anything.

thanks was looking at zetec , but i think the fiesta is a bit small and now going to look at a nissan note 1.4 , it seems to an economical car

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,191 ✭✭✭✭NIMAN

I have a Zetec Focus. Its a decent enough spec.

But I think the Note is a good car, so not a bad choice if not interfested in a Fiesta.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,544 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

The note's not bad, they are an 06 model, they got an update in 2009, lower emissions etc.
They're actually relatively huge inside and pretty well equipped.
They aren't that desirable second hand, they were heavily discounted when new, a lot are ex hire, so don't pay over the odds for one.
I don't think they're particularly troublesome, but make sure it's been serviced through its life.

What about the Honda Jazz? Bags of room and much better built than the Note.

Toyota Urban Cruiser is worth a look at too if you can find one.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,544 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

Urban cruiser is nowhere as big though. Especially in the boot.
