Our teagasc advisor set me up with an account back end of last year and I took a closing cover and an opening cover in Feb. I had exams and stuff for a few weeks and I haven't been able to do it rite until last week and today. We have a nixed farm split evenly between sheep and cattle
Some paddocks are grazed in a couple of days and others a week etc how do I record how long they were grazing it for or does it need to be recorded. When all the stock are out we will have 4 groups , is there anyway I should tell the computer this or does it matter .what should I put down for density of herbage and post grazing height, it is grazed down fairly tight .I often here of people saying they have 23 days ahead of them but how would I do that seen as I am not a dairy farmer and have a few groups if stock . all input appreciated and I will probably have more questions later.

you don't have to be a dairy farmer to know how to measure grass, once yu measure the grass there's a rough formula to work out how much dry matter you have and there's figures or how much each animal requires eg our ewes require 3.5 kgs dm each and the lambs is .5kg/day at 7 wks.
You'd be better to go back to teagasc methinks

Rangler got there before me ;)

Go into the teagasc to go through it all with you. How it should be setup, etc...

Then get him to come out and measure grass with you, show you what to do...

Think that should be covered in your annual premium - they charge enough, get em to work for it ;)

There was a very good thread on here from a few years ago on starting to grass measure, started by a lad called delaval I think... Have a look for it...

Measured her yesterday, 10 days grass ahead, happy out, although you wouldn't think it to look at it.
10 degrees and nice soft rain here, so maybe weather fore cast is wrong
