I got my third timing belt done around the middle of November 2013, my car has only covered 32k since then, book says it needs to be done every 4 years, so I should change again Nov 2017, grand job. However, the same engine in a German golf in Germany, same year, same engine code etc, has a 5 year belt change interval. Is…

Is this just another one of those let's rip the Irish motorist off situations, has anyone seen or heard of a bkd with a timing belt go after 4 years.

The time limit on VW timing belt intervals is very conservative. You should be fine running it out to at least 5 years and in reality far beyond that would also be ok.
