I am currently using a macbook pro retina for work and thinking of getting a macbook air for home/travel use. my concern is the lower screen resolution on the Air. From using the Macbook Pro at work all day will the lower res on the Macbook air just look crap when i get home? Has anyone any advice on this?

    Thanks all

I use both. 13" MBP, and a 11" MBA. The Macbook air is the handiest thing ever. Its perfect if you are traveling. The quality of the screen is fine. Ive never noticed a huge decrease in quality. but then again I'm not a pixel peeper.

What kind of work do you want the home/travel laptop to do?

If it's to have similar power to the pro then you'll have to sacrifice the retina screen. If it's an email/internet/light work machine then perhaps the MacBook 12" with retina could work.

With apple's laptop range I find that there's three things you can choose from and you can only choose two.

    Light
    Retina screen
    Powerful

Light and powerful - MacBook Air.
Light and retina - MacBook 12"
Light and powerful - doesn't exist*
Powerful and retina - MacBook Pro.

There's a sacrifice in every choice above.

    * this is what most people want and complain when the MacBook 12" doesn't deliver that.

iPad Air for home/travel? Hook it up with a Logitech keyboard case for typing.

thanks for your reply, yes i have never been a pixel peeper either so it should be fine, just read some reviews that gave the impression that the display on the air is terrible. But that appears to be untrue, especially on a 13 inch screen

I completely agree with you on the choices one must make, and I would be a mulitasker so I could not handle paying the huge amounts for a macbook 12 inch with the tiny processor thats in them and no connection ports at all.

And the ridiculously long battery life would be a huge benefit to me too.

Again my concern is that is the non retina display on the Macbook Air crap, but im getting the impression that it is still a very high quality display especially if you do not use it for high end video editing and graphics design.

I just tried reducing the screen res on my MBP to the same res as the mac book air, and even on the 15 inch screen the difference is nothing too drastic.

its completely untrue. The screen is fine.

Would you go for the 13" MPA? I thought that kinda defeated the purpose of the air. The 11" is incredibly handy to travel with. Battery life is incredible, will last the majority of a day. For the first couple of months, I didn't even bring my charger!

I was thinking the 11 inch alright but i find the screen size just a tad too small.
For me its the thickness thats the real issue, once its in my bad i wont notice the difference between the 11 and 13 inch but i do like the slightly bigger screen when working on it.

that was my argument when i was deciding between 11 and 13. But i can safely say that you get used to the 11" and its perfectly usable. And the benefits in weigh, completely outweighs the size difference.

I would say that if you are worried about thickness, there is really not a huge amount in the difference between the 13MPA and the 13MPB
