Now that the Galway Congress has been successfully completed, we can announce the annual FIDE-rated Galway Rapidplay, which will be held on Saturday 11 June, in the Bridge Centre, St Mary’s Road; games will start at 11 a.m., but entrants must arrive by 10.45 to register. Full information is here. There is a guaranteed prize fund of €550, which will increase if there are more than 50 entries. To enter, email the organizers (email address is in that link) by midday on Friday 10 June and pay €15 on registration, or turn up on the day and pay €25. And in case anybody has any doubts, we have been assured by the ICU Chairperson that this tournament definitely will be FIDE rated. Looking forward to seeing you in a (hopefully sunny) Galway.

It's just three days to go to the Galway Rapidplay, so now is the time to get your entry in. Full details, including how to enter (which is very easy) are available here. And in case any of you think that this weather is too good to be indoors playing chess, rest assured that the weather forecast for Saturday is "rain spreading from the west", as usual.

That makes it sound like players elsewhere might escape the rain - Google says Scattered Showers in Galway, with a 40% chance of rain, whereas Dublin, for example, is Showers with 50% chance of rain. Donegal is Scattered Showers too, with 50% chance of rain. Cork is only Partly Cloudy, granted, with a 20% chance of rain, but... do we really want any Corconians anyway? :P

Yes, we welcome people from everywhere, including Cork. Even more so if they're avoiding a mere 20% chance of rain to join us.

This year’s FIDE-rated Galway Rapidplay, played on Saturday 11 June, was won by Rob Lydiard, who came over from England for the event, with a score of 6½/7. Second was Stephen Moran (from Dublin) with 5½. There was a four-way tie on 5 points for third place, between top seed Philip Short, second seed Manuel Cabanas Jimenez (Spain), Karol Marzec (Poland), and Galway’s Denis Ruchko. The prize for the best junior (which can be won alongside other prizes) was won, with a round to spare, by Denis Ruchko. The Rating Prize was divided five ways, between Keng Lim Yap (Malaysia), Dwayne Spiteri (England), Elsheikh Gamal (Cork), Andrew Barber and Fintan Hegarty (both Galway), who all scored 3½. The international make-up of the field was noteworthy: there were also players representing Brazil and the Czech Republic. Full standings and crosstable are on our website page.
