Hi I'm 23 years old I got a drink diving ban for 2 years in 2014, I'm due my licence back in the next few weeks, now my question is about getting insurance and if the insurance company's will know if I have had a drink driving ban ? I have no penitly points and will have a clean licence so the girl told me in the ndls centre, I'm looking to go under my dads insurence policy when my licence is back so it won't be my policy he is with aviva. If I have to declare that I had a ban if they asked me the question Will this drastically increase the cost of insurance for me and my father and if they didn't know lets say and if I was in a accident with me driving under my dads name Would I be covered if I didn't declare it ?

You have to tell them, whether they ask you or not. If you don't, the policy is void. That's all there is to it. And yes, if you get quoted at all it'll be astronomical.

You will certainly not have a clean licence after a driving ban. The old style licences get a big blob of text which says when you lost your licence. Insurance companies will also ask if you were ever disqualified from driving.

10 points on the licence is cleaner than a ban to be fair...

To the OP. Ring up. You can't get a quote online as you have a conviction within the last five years. You will need to call for quotes for the next five years. Let them know you were banned. Then treat it same as any other time you go for insurance. They give you quote, you say is that the best you can do, XXX insurance can do it for 50 less etc.

Liberty insurance ask you if you have been disqualified from driving in the past 3 years for next year in the same boat but for careless driving

I know a lad who was convicted of dui back in 2001 he says it's still haunts him today. He can't shop around for a cheaper quote as everytime he does to this day they ask if he's got any convictions or claims. They used to say in the last 5 years but now they leave it open ended.

Anyway the insurance company you were with before are obliged by law to give you a fair quote if not its a matter for the ombudsman.

Ur going to be hammered first year back on the road ur license is going to have a stamp on it saying 2 year ban. What about xs direct or one off the insurance companies that deal with convictions.

High-horsery, whataboutery and some trolling removed.
Let's focus on the question at hand please

I had a driving ban for 1 year and endorsements on my licence approximately 15 years ago when quite young, wasn't for DUI, but for stupidly driving without insurance.

When I rang AIG recently for a quote, naturally I told them and they said I dont have to declare this anymore as its over 10 years. Really? I asked, as I dont see that anywhere in the print. I asked him to send me an email stating this to which he did and I have this on file..

    Ur going to be hammered
..I think this is what caused the problem in the first place.

How long is a piece of string tbh.

If someone has previous convictions then the pool of potential insurers ia very small as most companies will not want to quote.

Of those that will then I'd expect a conviction loading to be applied for a minimum of 12 months.

The load could be anything up to 100% of the premium (maybe more depending on the severity and number of convictions)

That's what I was thinking all right, no point giving out, its my own fault. Just going to have to see when the time comes.

Try the insurer I linked to before.

Even for non-endorsed drivers it's impossible to guess what the premium will be, so ever harder to guess for you.

Does anybody have any idea how you get your license back either??

If you handed the licence in to the court when you got banned, then you contact them for return of the licence.

One question mark suffices to denote a question.

    Mail NDLS and ask www.ndls.ie/contact.html
