Rev counter jumping while idling - VW Polo (08)

Hi all,

A family member recently purchased a 1.2L VW Polo which has been running fine except for one issue:

When stopped/idling at junctions, roundabouts, parking spots etc, the Rev counter will jump up and down between 0 and 10 with a rumbling under the car giving the impression that the car is going to cut out. However, as soon as you give the accelerator some juice, the problem goes away and the jumping stops instantly.

This may happen 3+ times a day or once every few days, however as the car is in warranty it's something we want to get sorted out before it's too late. It was brought back to the dealer last week who carried out a "throttle adaption update" but the problem still persists.

Any ideas of what is causing the problem/potential solutions that I could go back to the dealer with would be very much appreciated as I'm at a loss.

Air intake leak engine side of flow meter has been known to cause that type of issue but could be numerous other things

What age is the car? It sounds like problems associated with faulty distributors in cars years ago but don't know if the car is question has one or not.

I'm thinking clogged up throttlebody. Was that cleaned as part of whatever the mechanic did? I would assume so but just checking.
