This is my first time to post on here - hope someone can advise me. I worked in a university in London for over 20 years and retired in June 2011. My pension started immediately and I returned to Ireland in July 2011. I am now having issues around my UK pension and tax. I pay tax on the pension in the UK and my local tax office here don't seem to know whether or not I should also be taxed on it here. They have also informed me that I am not entitled to tax credits on my UK pension. I am jointly assessed with my husband who has a defence forces pension and does not pay tax. Can anyone advise please?

Well if you are resident here and living off the pension then it's taxable here.

Do you file a tax return in the UK?

Pension will be subject to tax with your husbands with some relief for UK taxes.

    Talk to an accountant.

Thank you for replying. Would anyone know please if I am entitled to tax credits based on my UK pension?

As a married person you and your husband get a married persons credit, you will as a result of your foreign pension qualify for the PAYE tax credit.

If you are taxed in the UK on UK Source income it is taxable here but a credit is allowed for the UK tax suffered.

An Effective rate calculations is to be used however to calculate the credit.

Because of tax treaties you are not taxed in full twice on the same income.

Ask HMRC about getting the pension paid free of tax. They have a form that they can send you out.

You then send that into the Irish Revenue, who certify that you are resident here for tax purposes, and that you will pay the tax due on the pension here instead

Just been notified that I will get a small State UK pension, 13 quid a week!

    How is it taxed here?
    PRSI/USC?
28/9 edited to add STATE, my bad :(

You suer about the USC, have just plugged it into the ROS F11 and its just taxed, like the State pension here?

Private pension has USC deducted, State pension doesn't. You can deduct any tax paid on the pension in UK too.

Once selected there should be a drop down or a pop up box to input either foreign state pension or other non-state pension. Maybe deselect and select again?
